Getting a 9 in GCSE Art Watch

Hello everyone. I'm currently doing GCSE Art & Design (AQA) and my exam is coming up in a few weeks' time. I just wanted to ask about getting a 9 in this subject - I know it seems far-fetched though...

So, the way my course is structured is that I have two set projects in a two year period and the final exam is another project of its own: three altogether. I've been given grades back and this is what I'm working on at the moment:

1st year coursework + final piece on still life = grade 7/8 (A4 book)
2nd year coursework + final piece on the environment = grade 9 (A4 + A3 book)

At the moment, I'm doing 'messages' and working on an A4 book to fill up.

Of course I want a 9 in the final thing - this is the one subject I can do well in and confidently well in, it's just that I'm worrying that what I'm doing now won't make up for the deficit from the first year. I had personal reasons as to why I couldn't catch up, which is why I wound up with a 7. Two years later, everything's pretty much changed. My teacher isn't expecting anything less from me and neither am I to be honest; I know I have the potential to do well.

Coursework and final pieces for said coursework makes up for 60% of the overall grade, whereas the final piece makes up for 40% I believe.

Will the grade from my first piece of coursework heavily affect my overall grade? Any tips? Do you think I can actually get a 9?

Thanks in advance!

I’m doing mine soon too, I’m not too worried about it as I am up to date. Just make sure you have annotated every page in detail, have lots of primary images and link images to artists. Try to do an analysis to get you into the higher brackets so things you dislike about the piece as well. Also, try to use more than three different types of material for your design ideas to show experimental variation.

As long as your artwork is creative/of a high standard/annotated(etc)...there's no reason why you can't get a 9 and if ur teacher is saying it...you probs are...they know what the marks are given for...you will do it...good luck

I do analyses a lot - takes up a double page plus I explain things / features I spot about influences and artists. My evaluations take up another page of analysis and showing reference photos as well.

I haven't been doing pieces with tons of varied media - I tend to stay on one or two types of media, eg) acrylics and stay up on a high standard. Luckily my teacher feels the same!

Good luck to the both of us and thank you for your help!

Hey! Thanks for responding. I hope that it's all enough really.

Spaces is an incredibly hard theme; some of the students at my school chose it and are regretting it last minute. How are you finding it?

Good luck to the both of us for the exam!
