I’d personally try modeling it as a graph and see where that can take you, call A (0,0) and the equation of line L is y=mx

Tbh, I really justj rotated the projection from D round a bit and noted that half the length was a bit less than 6. Assuming the diagram is roughly to scale, only one answer makes sense

is there no proper way of solving this?

bear in mind that this question originated from a math competition that has 24 questions we need to answer in 75 minutes so it can't be too complicated

Post 9. Can you see the three similar triangles and the relationship between the sides?

Btw, the post about reverse engineering the answer is half serious. It's a sensible thing to try if you're stuck and sometimes us a quick way to reduce the possibilities.
