DSA supporting information help?

Hi, I suffer very badly with depression and anxiety. I will be going into second year and I'm thinking of applying for DSA when I send off my student finance application as I've heard that they can provide extra help to people struggling with mental illness.

I was wondering how to apply though, I can see that if I say I do struggle with a mental illness I will have to meet the definitions. How do I go about proving this and when will they ask me for the information? Is it something that I have to be currently receiving medication for, do I have to provide doctors statements or is it an interview? I'm just quite confused and it's not something I've ever reached out for before so any advice and guidance would be greatly appreciated.

You'll be asked for some evidence from a medical professional, generally you'll need a letter explaining how your condition affects your ability to study and the doctor might be asked to fill in a form. You don't have to be on medication.

Okay thank you very much for replying  I was wondering what exactly DSA might be able to provide someone with mental illness, I have heard about laptops etc but somebody said to me that they can increase your maintenance loan by up to £1,700 if you struggle to support yourself and find work due to illness (mental or physical) but I haven't actually been able to find any information on this myself, so I wondered if you'd know anything about this.

You won't get a higher loan, I believe that's only the case for fully blind students or severe deafness. They would probably provide a mental health mentor and perhaps a travel allowance, laptop and equipment is possible but it depends on what your needs are assessed as.
I know this post is from a few months ago but thought I'd comment in case anyone's still reading it:

I receive DSA for mental health difficulties. I had an EHCP through school which I used as evidence, you could use any psychological reports or get your doctor to fill in the supporting letter. You will then get invited for an assessment. It isn't anything to worry about, they're really nice. It's just to see what support they can offer. They will then recommend it to student finance who will decide whether to approve it, which they usually do.

They provided me with a 1 2 1 mentor, which supports me with my mental health and academics, for 2 hours a week.

A laptop with specialist software and a no xrophone to record lectures.
