what kind of nightlife in Edinburgh?

how good is it, in regards to drum and bass, trance, techno, dubstep and more underground stuff?

ie. not commerical/cheesy/indie!

(im from bristol and hoping edinburgh might be decent enough!)

thanks.

well for a start you NEED ID, if you use fake Id it must be pretty good otherwise you just wont get in!

liquid rooms can be good, most of the student nights wont be what you're looking for though so that rules out city on wed/cav on sun/why not on fri, some places in the cowgate might be what you're wanting but i dont really know very much about the whole underground scene. some of the bigger clubs might do underground nights from time to time, cant remember which ones though

caberet voltaire do a pretty good drum and bass night on a tuesday =)
The Bongo Club is good. I don't agree about the ID. I've used someone else's/fake loads of times and so do a lot of my friends and they have always been fine.
I too am worried about the night life in Edinburgh. I come from Paisley (just outside Glasgow) and love the variety on offer in Glasgow. Would you say it is on par with Glasgow? I was under the impression that Edinburgh would be a bit posher and more expensive for clubbing etc?

it's risky with fake ID, people are often turned away from places sucha s why not and city if they have the wrong type of ID, even if they are 19 or 20

Nae danger! Lol, sorry, had to be said!

Glasgow is probably better for clubbing - but therein lies the fun of the 900 citylink after a night out!

Both cities have expensive clubs, but there are areas of Edinburgh like George Street which are quite costly - it all depends where you go/which night/time of year i.e. the festival could bankrupt you. If you're looking for cheap and dirty you'll find it in Edinburgh though!

If you're worried, what are you looking for? Indie, Dance, big clubs, cheap drink promos, novelty DJ's? I'm sure someone here will point you in the right direction

Do you get a lot of neds going to city/cav/why not? Would you consider them to be the more mainstream dance clubs in Edinburgh?

I've been an Edinburgh barfly since 15, and I can count on one hand the number of times I required ID. :p:

The nightlife in Edinburgh is great.
What's the Edinburgh students union like?
How are the sports represented in the union? Do they cater for football fans like myself? I would be raging if they didn't show SPL matches!

The sportsman bar show lots of sporting events (funnily enough), the pleasance bar also shows sport during the day, and if what you want to see isn't on at the union, the city is large enough that there'll be a pub somewhere showing what you want to see. If not then you can always watch tv at a friend's flat or your own. Endless opportunities to watch sport.

You don't see many neds in Edinburgh period unless you are likely to hang out in Leith I guess and even that is becoming more gentrified as we speak. I've only been threatened once in Why Not and that was due to a mistake. The Liquid Rooms is pretty good but only went once, will make it again sometime in the summer. Being from an island makes about any club bar those playing D'n'B good for me. If you want a place with a good mix of nights you might want to try The Hive (never been but I've heard a few good reviews).

Hmmm, we wouldn't know, since we always go to Glasgow for nights out!
i'm a little confused, why woould you need a fake id in edinburgh if the drinking age is 18? can't you just get in with your student id card or etc.
is the age different at clubs or something?

Lots of Scottish undergrads are 17 when they come to Edinburgh. Hence student ID does not cut it as proof of age here.

^ Yes. An Edinburgh University matriculation card does not give your date of birth. It will not be accepted in any pub/club as proof of age - instead you will have to produce a passport or driving license.
oh ok, thanks so much for the answer. can i use my american drivers license ?
^Yes, it's fine. Although, my Hawaiian flatmate got some suspicious looks from bouncers now and then because of all the rainbows and stuff on the card. But yeah, you shouldn't have too many troubles.
