Hi,

I have GCSE grades at 5 9's, 1 8, 1 A*, 1 7 and 1 6 + a C in further maths, and have predicted a levels at A*AA (for the moment, I believe I can get them moved up to A*A*A) Is there any point in me going for oxford medicine. My personal statement is quite strong, I have got lots of medical work experience, years of care and social volunteering and I would love to go to oxford but I know my grades aren't the best. Any advice going forward would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I believe grade requirements for medicine are A*AA including an A in 2 of the sciences or maths. So far it looks like you meet the requirements. Oxford look at the personal statement and use it shortlist interviews so I would get all teachers to check it and make sure it is outstanding in order to give you the best change. Also a lot of the time grades aren’t everything. You could get 3 A*s but if they don’t like you it’s unlikely they’ll take you. In terms of GCSEs I know people who have applied with bad grades and still been accepted so it looks like you have a very strong set of grades. I would make sure you include all your experience in your personal statement because that’s what Oxford are really looking for.

If you really want to study medicine I would go for it looks like you have very good grades and experience. I would prep for interviews in the future though.

Good luck!

Decide for yourself. Oxford shortlist on the basis of GCSEs and BMAT, and standards are very high.
