The Student Room Group
cool! So do you refuse offers of extra time in exams or additional learning support?

Nope.

The reason. I am neurodiverse. I do consider myself disabled- because compared to 'neurotypicals' I have certain lower abilities than them. However, Dyspraxia and ASD related conditions are not diseases, and I consider them too interwinded with someones personality. Because I have dyspraxia, it has gave me fantastic things- determination, although I have to work 10x harder than you, I will still slog at it. It has gave me compassion, especially for people in my situation. Without it, I think I would be ignorant of the difficulties faced by people like us, like alot of NT people are. It has also gave me , what is deemed as a photographic memory. I am also in the top 3 in the whole school in IT. Dyspraxia and ASDs mean that you can have a bit of an obsession- I prefer to call it my specialist subject. Extra time and a laptop put me as near equal level to you NTs- although I still ran out of time in some of my exams, some by as much as five pages. I also have statement of SEN which requires the school to have additional support in place if I need it. Due to my dyspraxia, some of my difficulties are in the 5th percentile. (50 is normal, 100 would mean you would also be better than everyone else etc). I believe dyspraxia is part of who I am, and without it, I highly doubt I would have the positive qualities I have to day.

 And now of course, I am going to get flamed.
