Clubs and nightlife at cambridge

I know i'm not even accepted yet, and chances are slim, plus this is really what should be my top worry right now, but just wanted to know what the nightlife at cambridge was like.

when i went there for open days, i didn't really stay for the night, how are the clubs like (i think there's a few of them...) prices etc?

oh and one thing i want to know, there's no mcdonalds in cambridge right? only a burgerking.

There's LIFE, Cindies, Cocos, Fez, the Kambar and the Junction.
Fez was playing decent music (early hiphop, funk etc) when I was last in, Kambar does indie on the weekends, Cindies is just cheese and I haven't been in the others.

Junction does gigs too, it's had Ghostface (of the wu-tang clan) and Pitchshifter recently. It gets some fairly big names, as does the corn exchange.

There's a McDs right in the centre of town but when Gardies is about two numbers down the street it always loses out on my trade . The out of town one near Churchill closed over the summer, but there's still a drive thru out newmarket road way apparently.

Alaric.

Cindies (actually called Ballare, but Cambridge students refuse to change) is the ultimate in über-cheese student fun. Generally most fun when you're drunk. If you're into music it will be hell.

Cocos - depends on the night, though I haven't been for ages. Thursdays is Cambridge night, it's "Urbanite" or something like that. They do something on Tuesdays, and cheap drinks on Sundays. Very variable, I've had great times there and I've had **** times. Less cheese, but still very studenty.

Fez = Mondays.

Po Na Na = Thursdays for the Clare posse, for some reason I am yet to understand. Tis quite good though, if a little empty on occasion.

Have never made it to Life or Kambar.

In all, if you're from London or any other city with a half decent nightlife, you'll think it's ****e, but go along because you have no choice other than staying in. If, like me, you're from a place that doesn't even have nightclubs (just local pubs for local people  ) then it's quite cool. But still cheesy.

having been very used to the liverpool nightlife, i'm not actually too disappointed with the cam clubs- they're pretty cheesy, cindies and coco's anyway, but nice. the union does gargage and serious dj things quite often if people are into that sort of thing.

lol! thanks for the answers people, cambridge sound a lot better now. the main opinion is: cheesy...which is quite open...these are what dictionary.com says:

Containing or resembling cheese.
Informal. Of poor quality; shoddy

is it even any of those 2?

Hmm...not really. Although it's not exactly of high quality. The main point of cheese is that it's fairly happy, easy-to-listen-to stuff that you've known forever. Hence Bryan Adams' Summer of 69 every single time - not that I mind as I love that song. And lots of more recent bouncy happy stuff. No high class music, though I don't know if that exists in clubs anyway.

 I suddenly had the urge to hear that song today!

Has Gardies not been closed down then?!

I've only been to life and cindies and kambar, which we got kicked out of . But they were all good nights, you soon learn to appreciate trash

Some of the unwitting freshers have been dooped! My question is, do you pronounce it "bal-ar-ray" or "bal-arrrr!"

THAT is my sound.
Old school hip hop, deep funk - keepin' it b-boy, baby

...It's odd, I've kind of convinced myself that Cambridge would be boring.
I guess it's a defense mechanism- if I don't get in, I keep the belief that I'd have "more of a life" at other Unis.

Still could be true though, work and all...

Good stuff. If Trinity decide, for some very mad reason, to accept me, I can go and speak awful Greek to them when very drunk...ahh, such fun...

I was actually very impressed by the Cambridge clubs, it's all relative though, home isn't exactly great! They do play some awful music (dancey rubbish that you can't really dance to anyway) but it's balanced by some classics, I don't know many clubs that would play 'I am the one and only'
Prices are ridiculous, college bars seem the only decent places, and they're about the same as normal home prices. Even the pubs are really expensive, there are deals on drinks but for the more random drink choices such as Iron Bru WKD and other sickly things!

I can't believe even Cindies play that. And yet they do. Every time.
