Lack of support for mature students Watch

A warning for all those considering going back into education.

I’m a mature student, independent living in rented unfurnished accommodation. 2nd year of my course required I worked 1075 unpaid voluntary hours. My maintenance loan for the entire year was £2600. To try and meet my bills I’m working 50 hours per week- inc 24 unpaid voluntary- in a physical and emotionally demanding job. I have no time to study, no funds to pay for internet or much food and am now looking at the terrifying and heartbreaking prospect of having to surrender my pets, get rid of all my furniture and move to a bedsit- or drop out the course. I was assured my situation would be reassessed and likely modestly uplifted but with little explanation I received notice that nothing further would be loaned. the harsh reality is that if you have to do voluntary hours you need supportive family or savings. No one lets you in on that little nugget until it’s too late. With no family and all savings gone I’m truly stuffed.

Your university should have told you about this at the start of your course. Have you talked to them about applying for hardship funds? This is exactly the sort of situation that they are for.

I contacted them twice to apply when student finance first clarified the loan amount and again when I appealed without success. The response I got was well it’s only £300 so won’t help much. Didn’t fancy a third time rejection but with help from my ever so supportive placement I’m trying again. Learned not to hold my breath though.
