Why do we have to be part of European Union, wouldn't it be much more advantageous to be part of the USA? We would enjoy the protection of the most powerful military. And be part of the world's largest economy. A Brit could then be elected president of the USA...

I understand that this is a highly unlikely hypothetical but it does raise an interesting question regarding how the Article II requirements for the office of president could be interpreted.

"No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years"

Would a Brit be eligible to run right away because his place of birth is now part of the USA or due to the fact that it was a foreign country at time of birth do you have to wait at least 35 years for a Brit that was born under the American flag?

Again, i realize this unlikely in the extreme, just think it's an interesting question.

Why would they take in a debt laden basket case like us? 🤔

Now Norway, that would make sense.

The UK is actually about in the middle of the debt tables for developed nations and compared to many US states, we are a model of fiscal prudence.

That makes no sense. NATO gives us the US protection and the EU is one of the biggest economies. Plus it is only 20 miles away and Europeans are much closer to us in terms of culture and attitude than the US.

Id rather just be an independent nation outside of both the EU or USA, but if I had to choose? I would probably take the EU as it is today, but were the EU to grow to the point where it had its own army, full legal intergration, a single economic policy etc. then I would probably take the US.
