Hey guys!

Diksha here!

I'm doing GCSE Spanish and I can't work out the difference between the preterite and imperfect tense, like they're both past tenses so I can't appreciate their differences and was wondering if you guys could help me out...

Thanks so much in advance!

I’m not the best person to answer this since I get a bit confused myself but I think I’ve got a grasp of the basics so I might be able to help.
The preterite is used for actions that have finished or that occurred on just one day

For example you could say that on the third day of your holidays you went to the beach and you’d use ‘fui a la playa’ because it was on just that specific day

However if you went to the beach frequently during that holiday you could say ‘a menudo, iba a la playa’ using the imperfect since you did the action repeatedly over a period of time

You also generally use the imperfect where you tend to use ‘ I used to’ in English. So if you were talking about what you were life or what you did as a child you would use imperfect

Also if you're describing something you'll usually use the imperfect e.g ''It was sunny'' would be ''estaba soleado'' and ''he was funny'' would be ''él era divertido''.
