Only 18 years old, found dead in her home apparently from a cardiac arrest

She died of a heart attack at the young age of 18. His mother died of leukaemia in 2016. That's a lot for one person to take.

I am not saying it isn't sad or that it doesn't pull at Noto's heartstrings. It is a tenuous news story, however, and I don't think it should be on the front of BBC News.

Tenuous because he's a singer you don't care for? I'm not a huge One Direction or Louis Tomlinson fan, but the death of a young person is rough enough as it is, but even more so knowing that he has now lost two family members. It's sad that you think that the death of someone is not a good enough news story.

News is news because it is shocking and/or has relevance to people, society or (parts of) the world. With that news, discussion is stimulated and public opinion or behaviour is influenced.

The death of a sibling of a singer doesn't really fit that criteria. It does not play down the significance of the death, but it just means there are more pressing issues to discuss or be informed about e.g. deaths caused or influenced by alcohol consumption, knife crime, etc.

We can still talk about all those topics while talking about "lesser" ones. News is just new, noteworthy information. There is entertainment news as well. The death of a famous persons sibling is something people care about, even if you don't.

Feel free to go discuss these more important topics somewhere else then. Nobody asked you to show up here did they? Jesus Christ.

I disagree with the existence of most entertainment news as being something purposeful based on the premise that life has objective meaning and that being consumed in pointless affairs like celebrities divorcing, taking a dump, nip slips, relatives dying, wearing certain clothes, etc is a waste of time and adds nothing meaningful to life other than to distract people from living their own and doing something with it; that isn't to say I do not sympathise for those who lose loved ones or go through divorce or other issues. If the celebrity themselves die, or the relative dies under shocking circumstances (which would otherwise qualify as normal for normal news) e.g. a driveby shooting, it is a different matter though.

My wider vision for news outlets based on wisdom is for them to be a force for good by channelling public opinion positively for important issues, and part of that vision is cutting out pointless and unnecessary news.

This is just my view though and it is unlikely to become popular because most people are too short sighted, attached to the status quo or emotional, and society and the infotainment industry is too far gone for meaningful change (since no one will reform it).

Lol, I didn't realise you were gonna go on a whole rant about entertainment news. I know you don't like it, or care about it but some people do. But It's nice to not have to be so serious all the time, viewing this type of news is not going to make any significant difference to your productivity nor is it going to stop you fulfilling your "purpose". Having entertainment news, something you don't even have to view, is not mutually exclusive to having news about "important topics". You're definitely overreacting.
