Is the word 'bird' offensive? Watch

Not sure if this is the right forum so apologies if not.

Today in English Lit (Yr 12) I was giving a class presentation about a love poem.
I described the speaker and his female companion as "his bird". I was then ganged up on by the class and told my language was "inappropriate" and "offensive" by my teacher (Who is a die-hard Left winger who routinely insults those who disagree with him and has made several sarcastic + rude remarks about my accent).
So was I in the wrong, or is my teacher?
Thanks

If someone called my sister or mother 'bird', I don't think I'd be very happy. Therefore I would refrain from using it, especially in the context of a formal class presentation.

It’s in a formal class setting so just say girlfriend tbh no one cares it was probably an excuse to make a fuss (apart from teacher who’s probs annoyed)

Not gonna lie, I would be annoyed if someone described me as someone else's 'bird' in a class situation. I think it lacks respect.

to be fair though you aren't a fictional character from 200+ years ago.

Not particularly but who cares what he or the class think as they seem like utter morons, many words like this are used by people that have absolutely no bad intentions.
