(Going to sound like a nutter here)

At A-level I did history, during which we discussed several English/U.K. monarchs. Sometimes we had discussions over which one was the worst or the best.

What do you think?

Feel free to define worst and best as you please.

I’ll start.

Worst: Henry VI, lost France and his incapableness led to the war of the roses.

Worst: Henry VIII: killed thousands of people who simply wanted to read the bible for themselves in English, then when the tide changed he issued a bible in his name, having mercilessly persecuted Tyndale who translated most of it.

Best: Oliver Cromwell: fought against the evil monarchy and won.

Not technically a monarch.

Although neither is my best, which is why I didn’t mention it. 😂😂

There are loads of bad Medieval kings, its part of what makes the era so fascinating. That deeply flawed individuals could rise to supreme power simply because of their blood. Other contenders would be Edward II and Richard II of course, I mean they both had their crowns usurped.

True. Edward also lost a lot in Scotland. Richard was weaker due to being king so young, it happened to all those who became child kings, John of Gaunt was more or less able to dominate the country at the start. Speaking of John’s, King John is an example.
