So I was curious, what are the students opinions about "Cognitive Enhancers" such as Ritalin and Modafinil? Have you ever taken them and did it help? Or is a nice cup of coffee better for concentration?
I'm confident in my ability to do well without any chemical help.
Ditto. The most I would go for was alot of Red Bull or Starbucks for those times when I feel a bit sluggish but that's not really for studying. I definetly wouldn't take anything before an exam it might go horribly wrong.
I've taken Modafinil for a bit of extra study time when deadlines were looming. It's just turns off the 'tired' feeling.
Sounds good, I might have to give it a try. What would happen if I stayed up for 24 hrs and then crashed? Would I need to sleep it off or would I wake up normal?

It's not a substitute for sleep. If you stay up for 24 hours to finish some work, you'll need to do some catch-up sleep next day.
I used it to get away with about 4 hours sleep a night while writing the dissertation.

So is it just like better caffine, with less of the bad side effects and more of the good side effects? Could I potentially, if I kept redosing, stay up for a few days?

No, it's not safe to do that. When I've been working with St. John Ambulance I've seen somebody on 3 days without sleep and they were very very ill. Basically asleep but on her feet, couldn't feel it when we were pricking her with injections.
In a way it *is* like improved caffeine - longer lasting, and you do feel clear minded, but it is not a substitute for sleep.

I'm not thinking about abusing it don't worry, I was just trying to get a feel for how powerful it is in comparison to caffine where you could get say 24 extra hrs out of yourself before it would do no more. If it enhances your work ethic I might give some to my friend who gets above 80% consistently to see what happens though .
Speed is useful for cramming, but of course it's illegal, addictive and an appetite supressant, so if you choose to do it, be careful. Likewise with Ritalin.
However, there's a legal stim called 'ex-1' which is herbal and keeps you awake without making you feel 'high'.
