That's a good question.
I think it's because magnesium hydroxide is insoluble in water but calcium hydroxide isn't.
Magnesium hydroxide is insoluble in water and so will not for an alkaline solution but it will react with excess stomach acid.
Calcium hydroxide will dissolve in water and form an alkaline solution which is not desirable in the stomach.
