its apparently one of the hardest modules to take next year. i've pre-registered my interest in POF, but simply so that i don't have to learn the stuff again when interviewing (hopefully) for internships next year.

alternatively, i'm considering attending the lectures for it and choosing a different optional module, one which complements my core econ modules.

if peter corvi is teaching any part of it and you haven't had him before then its a great learning experience because imho he's the best lecturer i've ever had.

it's not one of the hardest modules. Macro 2 and micro 2 are a lot harder
Peter corvi did not teach it this year - it was Ilias Tsiakas and Elizabeth Whalley, likely to stay the same.
Would recommend doing it, very useful, albeit not easy.

I'm taking this ****. Should build nicely on top of Foundations~Acc.&Fin.

what are the easiest 2nd or 3rd year econ. classes out there?

doing something like marketing from wbs i'd imagine...

straight econ only get one option in 2nd for many this is PoF.
For 3rd year you can either take the "essay" route and choose modules like econ pol in the uk, econ systems since 1918 and other stuff like that. Basically applying the macro you learnt.
Or, you can take things like Econometrics 2 and Topics in Economic theory and International Economics, which is basically more macro, micro, and maths. Joy!
Finally, do a little bit of everything and throw in a bit of business school to dilute things.

I always say this but dont do POF... its really tough and when you're doing a degree like econ which already has 3 difficult core modules in second year its just not worth it. ESPECIALLY when you have a subject like micro 2 which you can get a 3rd/fail in all too easily... you want your option module to be one that will pull UP your average not pull it down.

Re: save you time learning stuff for interviews - aaah I hate this reason! If they see you are studying something like PoF then they will ask you more complex questions testing your knowledge of it. If they see you're not they will not hold it against you and will ask more basic questions that will use more intuition and will be happy to guide you through it. For my lehmans interview I had no shame in asking what I think the P&L sheet was (i forget all the terminology now haha but it was a pretty basic thing) and answered questions fine and got through to final round. And banks will rather teach you themselves everything so you wont have much of an 'advantage' having studied it. Of course this is all my opinion.

For your option I would recommend a level 1 language (I am of course biased because thats what I did lol). But seriously, its so much fun and you feel like you are back in school. And of course, employers love to see you are interested in learning new things :P I did Japanese by the way it was WICKED!!!!!! And its pretty easy to get a first as well. It pulled up my average loads (41% in micro - score!!!! please note this is not an unusual mark loads of people fail micro 2/get 3rds no kidding) and it was so nice to do something a bit different and refreshing. Languages ftw! and then you can carry on doing level 2 in your final year

Modules such as marketing etc from wbs are ok and quite easy BUT be warned that because its so easy (and they know it), its pretty heavy on the reading and textbook front. So while econ modules are tough but less content to make it balance, wbs modules are easy but have a textbook's worth of stuff to basically memorise.

Is it too late to register for second-year WBS modules? I wasn't really interested when the email was sent around but, having another look, the PoF module seems interesting.

I think you might still be able to do it when OMR opens but without registering interest on such a popular course you might not get a place. I was told to do this module by a couple of 2nd years, haven't signed up for it though. Are there any prerequisites?
Reply 10
you need to have signed up on my.wbs i'd imagine and i think there is a prerequisite of foundations for a+f but i don't think they're too strict on it i know ppl who are doing it/will do it w/ out having done any wbs modules
Reply 11
there's no prerequisite. otherwise i wouldn't be able to take it  we're only allowed one WBS module also you can go ask them to get registered but online registeration is, i believe, closed...
According to maths there is a prerequisite:

Micro 2 and PoF are on the same day this year!!
ouch...good luck

lame, that would suck! it seems that POF must be made up of mainly econs students anyway...
lol out of all the people doing econ that i know and have asked...ALL of them except 1 are doing PoF
Reply 18
MathEcon 1 is also a fairly popular option and helps with the Micro 2 paper somewhat.

Yea, we have Micro and PoF on the same day - 16% of our degree in 6 hours.

do you think everyone gets POF ?
