When the aromatic ring is the main functional group the suffix benzene is used. When there is a more important functional group (higher priority) then phenyl is used as a prefix.

Methylbenzene - the ring is more important (higher priority) than the alkyl chain.
Phenylethene - the alkenyl group has a higher priority than the aromatic ring.

Nitrobenzene - the nitro group is low priority
Phenylamine - the amine group is higher priority.

Okay, so how do I know which groups have a higher priority or is more important ?

The easiest way is just to learn the names of the common compounds.
