The horror of total war inflicts cultural damage to all sides; perhaps more so to the losers. the previous consensus is shredded and societal structures are ripped apart. The emotional and moral framework of beliefs provided by the Churches and other organizations is called into question in the face of overwhelming trauma.

This psychological damage can also be expected in the next few years as the fallout from the Brexit débâcle becomes apparent. The remaining vestiges of national cohesion will evaporate; the few unifying centripetal forces such as regard for the Royal Family will be much diluted when the present Monarch passes. Trust in political processes will no longer be a given.

The behaviors associated with these times include self indulgent risk taking by young people as they see no hope for the future and no respect for the norms of society which has betrayed their dreams. the traditional trajectory of study, career, marriage, family will no longer apply as the economy fails.

As the poet said

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

The feeling of general nihilism that occurs post war

Step 1. Dictionary. Define: Nihilism

Step 2. Consider the psyhchological effects of war on humans

Step 3. Combining the two, reflect on the meaning of the term, 'Post war nihilism'
