Aqa Computing Unit 4 & 5 June 08!

Hello all

Don't know if there's another thread like this but hows everyone doing with revision for computing aqa a2?

Does anyone have any good revision resources apart from the textbook? Possibly the January 08 paper ? If so please could you maybe send it to me.

My computing teacher said the chief of examiners changed a few years ago so these recent papers are supposed to be a lot more different than the ones before.

Good luck everyone

I just started revision for CPT4 and CPT5 yesterday and have found that I don't remember much of it after spending so long on the coursework (CPT6). :s-smilie:

But I still managed to get 55/65 on January 2007 CPT4 in under 30 mins.

And I do have the January 2008 CPT4 and CPT5 past papers (and mark schemes), but would have to scan them in which would take ages and I'm not sure if I have any incentive to do so... maybe (and only maybe) if enough people wanted them.
I do have the January 2008 CPT5 paper and mark scheme , which is attached.I've only looked at the CPT5 papers since June 2004 but I did notice there is a different style in the CPT4 exams since around then indeed.

The papers come from e-AQA by the way - I persuaded my exams officer to download me the papers. You can't access the site as a candidate because it has all a centre's results etc on so you need to go through your exams officer.

Hi

woah that's so cool! thanks so much. i've got some really ancient past papers back from jan 03 if anyone wants them.

Is there any chance of getting a copy of unit 4 Jan 08? I've been finding the assembly language questions ultimately difficult lately. Which worries me because my unit 6 project was programming in a high level language something which acts like an assembler. !!

it's just every time I do a q I believe mine works but the MS is slightly difference and I just hope the examiners are intelligent enough to "go through" them and make sure they're cool

It doesn't have to be exactly like the mark scheme; I find that my assembly language answers don't quite match up either, but if they work it should be OK.

If you can't find it anywhere else then I'll find some time to scan CPT4 January 2008 for you.

Ooo thankyou very much!
Any of the old papers that you need I'll happily upload as well.

I've just been taking a look at the unit 5 jan 08 paper

they like their html questions nowadays. It's funny how sometimes it gives you the html and says "Please draw this webpage"(which is fine)
but if it's the other way around and you have to write the html it can be a lot more annoying. My programming interests don't lie within html!! haha oh well

Some notes that I made before for anyone who it may help:

<H1 ALIGN = "CENTER">Topics</H1> Heading 1 Align to the centre. And it should say Topics

NEXT LINE = <BR>
MISS A LINE = <BR><BR> = <P>
HORIZONTAL RULE <HR>

I have all of them back to around January 2002 (and some before ), but thanks for the offer (similarly to Noizuf).

Anyway, the PDF files are too big to be attached here so I had to upload them:
AQA CPT4 January 2008 Question Paper
AQA CPT4 January 2008 Mark Scheme

Hope that they're helpful.

Thankyou so so much for this I really appreciate it!!
Hey, I've just finished AS Computing and I'm just wondering how hard everyone here finds A2 Computing? I've heard the coursework is very time consuming but rewarding since it's worth 120 UMS marks. How's the theory for CPT4/5? Do you think it's manageable to get an A/B if you've got absolutely rubbish teachers? I was considering dropping Computing but my exams went a lot better than I thought they would be so I'm looking at continuing it on next year.

How did everyone here do in CPT1/2/3 last year?

(Sorry to hi-jack the thread! Good luck with your exams people!)

I haven't found the theory for CPT4/5 that much more difficult than that for CPT1/2; it's just a little more detailed. The hardest parts are probably floating point numbers (mantissa and exponent with Two's Complement) and perhaps assembly language (if that isn't your thing, personally I like it more than HLL). The coursework does indeed take forever (and is the worst part in my opinion, but I am doing 5 A2s so the time might not be such a factor otherwise), but if you do well it will take the pressure off the exams quite significantly. Getting an A is certainly manageable through use of the specification, past papers and mark schemes, provided that you have some natural aptitude for the subject. But be warned, universities don't particularly like the subject (hence it being excluded from my Firm offer).

Check my profile.
That's incredible - 300/300! (Congratulations!)

Why on earth isn't it respected? I'm quite shocked your offer excludes Computing. Do you think it's an Oxbridge thing or is it because of your chosen course? LSE haven't excluded Computing right?

Wow, I'm hopefully going to apply for medicine and I won't be surprised if my offers (if I even get one) will be based on Biology, Chemistry, and Maths only, excluding Computing. I hope Imperial take a shine on me if I apply there since they're known for their Computer Science facilities. Though they don't even acknowledge Computing for Computer Science so who knows haha!

Thanks. It was a bit unexpected and one of the main reasons why I continued it (to try to get 600/600).

My Computing teacher reckons that it isn't respected as much as it should be at times because people confuse it with ICT. As for whether it's an Oxbridge thing or due to the course, I think it's probably a bit of both but more the former than the latter. I say this because my friend who has an offer for Computer Science at Cambridge has also got Computing excluded from his offer. And yes, LSE have not excluded it, nor have UCL, Warwick or Southampton.

Imperial are probably more likely to accept it as my friend who has an offer for Physics did not have Computing excluded.

As I'm sure you know, Medicine is incredibly competitive so good luck with your application next year!

Hi

I was in a similar dillemma when I was choosing my A2 levels. I couldn't decide whether to drop Physics or computing and literally every person I ever spoke to told me computing wasn't half as respected as physics. soooo annoying

I agree with alex_hk90's computing teacher as loads of people get it confused with ICT. I think the thing about computing is that it's just a very "handy" subject to have if you're going to be studying a subject which has a lot of programming aspects about it and you want a head start. I'm applying for Comp Sci so unis describe it as "useful" but "not essential" However I don't know what they'd think about it for medicine. It depends on the uni completely cos I wouldn't have got a lower offer if I had chosen physics insteada computing

Out of interest, what is your Firm offer (and what subject/university is it for)?

AAB (Need A in maths.) At York University for Maths and Computer Science (congrats on your Cambridge offer btw).

I applied to cambridge but got rejected! All my teachers were telling me cambridge would hate the fact I had computing and not physics (or rather both). They pooled me but didn't re-interview me which doesn't surprise me if they're "excluding" computing from offers (I gotta say I didn't know that at the time!!)

Despite Having the Marks Scheme for Papers for Module 4, I still don't understand the method of using assembly code.

Has anyone got a simple way to explain it? I just can't seem to get my head around it, and its worth so many marks! I'm alright with LD and ST, but when it comes to using AND and OR functions etc, as well as when its necessary to multiply etc... I'm so confused!

The AND, OR and MUL has nothing to do with assembly per se, but just what processing you need to do with the data.

As it's difficult to explain this generally, could you specify a particular example that you are having trouble with?

Well, for example the question in CPT4 Jan 08 shows a table -

Address Hexadecimal Representation ASCII Character
015A 32 '2'
015B 36 '6'

and then the question...

'Write the necessary assembly code instructions to convert the characters '2', '6' into a BCD representation of the denary value 26 and store the result in location 01A6. You may use location 01A5 as a work area.'
(It might be easier for you to understand by looking at the paper you uploaded! )

The answer is..

LD 015A
AND #0F
MUL #10
ST 01A5
LD 015B
AND #05
ADD 01A5
ST 01A6

..But why AND?? Why #05?? Why multiply #10?! Where does that come into the equation?!

Sorry if this all sounds like mumbo jumbo!

..But why AND?? Why #05?? Why multiply #10?! Where does that come into the equation?!

It follows on from the previous part of the question, where you had to devise an AND operation to convert an ASCII code to a binary integer [Q5(a)(i)].
From the information it gives you, it is clear that you need to apply a mask so that only the final four bits remain, so that gives you AND #0F (because #0F = 00001111).

The multiply by #10 (since that's hex it's actually multiply by 16) is to move the '2' from the last four bits of the byte to the first four bits of the byte.
This is so that there is space for the '6' in the first four bits, and so that you can fit 2 digits of the BCD in one byte (and not waste any more space than necessary).

Finally, I can't see any reference to #05 in the mark scheme, it should just be another AND #0F for the second digit.

Hope this helps.
