I am a second year student on the Midwifery degree. Is it correct that when you turn 25 you get the maximum maintenance loan? I was 24 when I started my degree and my maintenance loan was £3000 in my first year 2017/2018 (minimum amount based on parents' high income). However I turned 25 in April 2018 and for academic year 2018/2019 I was again awarded £3000. Should I have been given the maximum maintenance loan for 2018/2019? I have just had my application approved for 2019/2020 (when I will be 26) and I have been awarded the full amount £8471.

Hi Hannah,

Based on the information you have provided your funding is correct. In order to be eligible as an independent student, the student must be 25 or over before the start of the academic year. To be an independent student in the 2018/19 academic year, you must have turned 25 before 01/09/2018. As you have turned 25 prior to 01/09/2019 you will be assessed as an independent student.

Thanks,
Erin K
