Hi,

I was having a debate with my friends about dating and one of them said, “I’m mainly attracted to blonde, white girls”, which seems fair as it’s a preference thing but then he said “I’m just not really attracted to black people”.

He said this wasn’t racist as it’s the same as saying you’re not attracted to gingers or people under 5 foot 5 day and he’s just more personally attracted to white people.

I get where he’s coming from but do you think if someone said they’re not attracted to a particular ethnicity, whether it be white people, black people, Asians etc, it should be classified as racist?

He wouldn’t discriminate against black people and would be more than happy to be friends with them, he just said he doesn’t find them attractive in a dating sense.

Thoughts?
Nope, it’s not racist at all nor does it qualify as the basis of racism, which is discriminating against others negatively for their skin colour. Just as no reasonable person would consider it sexist for straight women to not be attracted to other women.

but how can i control it? cos its just a preference whether its racist or not i dont find them good looking at all/how they act. it doesn't mean im going to fight them
i dont find their features attractive e.g noses and hair

i only like whites
i mean, you're also substantially lacking in grey matter by the looks of your "reasoning" so i'm sure "black people" aren't missing out on much

lmao do you not think i know that? i live in a black area. why is it so bad that i dont find them good looking lmao
i wouldnt care if a black person had lighter skin or was "posh" I SIMPLY DONT FIND THEM ATTRACTIVE IN ANY WAY.

doesnt mean i will fight them
So which is it; dark skin—which, while a valid preference, is also characteristic of non-blacks—or a particular 'urban' subculture, attitude and idiom—which, while again valid, has long since cross-pollinated with whites of similar background?

If you can't master English sufficiently to say what you mean, nor the art of examining ideas such that you know what you mean, then you're going to encounter this problem with dispiriting regularity; and ultimately, wind up being lambasted as a bigot.

Racism is racial hatred- far from harmless and usually based on lies or conspiracy theories.
You are conflating racism with racialism, extreme tribalism and separatism- leaving yourself open to suggestions that you nod along to the peta speciesism agenda embraced by some sections of the vegan based on animal rights movement.
Tribalism, xenophobia and having zero interest in hearing other viewpoints- those are entirely different issue and often do not involve race.
Hatred does not need to involve violence; take a look at the toxic race hate nonsense writings of Arnold Leese, speeches of John Tyndall and all the vile babble of Richard Spencer.

A lot of religious hardliners demonstrate all the traits you describe in association with indifference, vague disinterest and separatism.
But its not based on race at all, its all based on a form of religious tribalism.
Their religious congregations are made up of all different ethnicities and they welcome converts from all races.
But they avoid discussions, interactions and close day to day contact with active members of other religions, militant atheists or ex members of their religion.
Because they know those people will always disagree with them and there is nothing that they can do to change this.
They are not loud, vocal or criminal- just closed minded.
I'm not confusing anything with anything. I literally said "racism or separatism" in my last sentence to you in my previous post...

Ok, racial is not racism, but racism is racial, so we can discuss racialism here, and again, if you are racist, it doesn't mean you hate them, it just means you are indifferent to them because of their race. I said to someone else on this page I believe (and it's not your responsibility to read every new post, but you really should) that if you scrape beneath the surface of this racial indifference you might either get something harmless or nasty, indifference as in: not wanting to befriend someone of a certain race, without hating them, just a casual disinterest. Most people are racially indifferent, and it could all stem from racism, but that doesn't mean we hate each other. We just dont value each other. Not all of us who dont have friends from a different race do it consciously, whereas your example of academic or scientific racism being nonviolent hatred is an extreme prejudice that most of us do not partake in nor entertain anymore. There is no blatant academic or scientific racism left because it's illegal now, it's not the nazi regime or the civil rights era of the USA and slavery is abolished, yet we still in this day and age, most of us don't have a diverse group of good friends or a diverse dating life. But we're not hateful. We are just not interested. Racism is not hatred. I didnt say it can't be. Sometimes it really is just what the dictionary definition is: the mentality that someone is inferior or superior due to race. That's it.

That's like saying you're homophobic if you aren't attracted to the same sex

If it's your "preference" then you are making a conscious choice to reject someone of a certain group. Preference means choice...and actually that is more racist than just being casually indifferent of another culture, or simply content with your own, as most of us are, without doing so hatefully, and if there came a time when speaking to someone of a different race occurred, you might act openly to them. That is my point here. londonmyst

i mean you're doing the same thing by assuming that all south asians are "culturaly" some-how different to you and that because of this assumption you don't find them attractive. you're literally just as bad.

Meh, people get offended too easily nowadays. I’m similar, I’m simply not attracted to black people, never have been. I mean, there’s always the possibility that one day someone might come along and change my opinion, but in the context of a discussion it seems reasonable to say “I’m not attracted to X people” if you’ve never found any of them attractive before.

Thoug
it is kind of racist to clearly say im not attracted to a race because race has nothing to do with looks or personality

How on Earth does race have nothing to do with looks? It has virtually everything to do with your physical appareance.

no one's attacking you for dating people of a certain ethnicity you're being "attacked" because you're too close minded to understand that you can't write off whole swathes of society that probably will have combinations of features you find attractive and can just get away with it. like, christ alive, you guys realise what you're saying sometimes?
