Thank you very much.
Problem is, I didn't receive anything yet so I don't have my username and password to apply. I have sent a mail to the admission officer, I was replied that the stuff has been sent again.
So apparently at least 3 things have been lost!
1) offer letter
2) offer confirming I have put the firm - mydigs
3) mydigs again

I'm not so worried because I think the deadline is the 30 of June, and everybody will be given equal consideration if the application is made before that deadline.
But it's kinda annoying.

All the material from UCAS and other university has arrived, so it's not a problem with my address, and there are no snakes in my mailbox.

If you are a prospective student
Your School Office at KCL will have notified you of your 7-digit KCL identification number (08-----) in your offer of a place at the College. Enter this number as your Username.
You will also have been issued password instructions in the offer letter from your School Office.

Try that.

Just from UCAS.
In my post, mailbox, I didn't receive anything yet - LOL
I've received and firmed the offer around 2 months ago...

If nothing comes in these days, I'll e-mail the admission tutor again.

Best thing in this case would be call them. If you're overseas, get a phone card so it's cheaper.

I live there atm

1, Is there wired internet points in the rooms or is it all wireless?
It's all wireless, and they are having teething problems still but it is mostly ok.
2, What are the common room facilities like?
A bit pants, I don't know many people that use it really, the floor kitchens are the main social area.
3, What would be the best piece of advice you would give to someone moving into Wolfson? IE What would you have brought with you etc etc..
Don't know really, just get to know everyone on your floor cause you will be on top of eachother all year, there are only 3 toilets, 2 showers and a small kitchen between 14
4, Is it quite sociable?
Yes very, one of the best as far as I can tell, especially if you are floor side, in the flats there are only 4 people so that is less sociable.
5, Are the security staff and building staff quite chilled out?
No, the security staff are not very nice. The manager is nice if you stay on the right side of her.
6, What's the state of the bathroom facilities like?
Quite horrible to be honest, we only have one working shower between 14 of us and it has black mould all over the ceiling. The toilet seats always break too  Plus the cleaners are rubbish.
7, What's with the whole "yes/no minifridge" situation? - Would you recommend we bring our own?
There is loads of space in the kitchen, plus by the time you guys get there they will have replaced most of them with spanky new kitchens.

I will be honest, wolfson is grotty. But the location is great for Guys campus, the social side is really good and it is very cheap which is a big plus.

Eheh, I still have to do my application.
Only now I've got my username and password (LOL)...but now the server is busy maybe, I cannot access the online application thing.
I'll try again tonight, maybe now it's busy because of all the latecomers like me. Finger crossed.

I was thinking about going for Wolfson House, because as far as I know it's the only one with
- halls
- not far away

Can anybody tell me what kind of people are there? Are they all medics, male/female ratio, internationals...

all sorts really. plenty of medics but you dont feel like theyre in some massive majority, its 50/50 as far as i know, and yeah some, but they don't clique off into nationalities or can't speak english or anything if that's your question, they're cool.

I was there this year and enjoyed every second of it. Sure the rooms aren't massive but they are bigger than GDS and I liked it (I have a lot of stuff, I kept a bike, cello, bass guitar and amp in there and still managed to have 3 people sleep over..).

While you may go into your room thinking it's crap, mine looked great once I covered the walls in posters.

The social aspect of wolfson is amazing, get to know everyone on your floor asap as they will be your first circle of friends and my floormates are some of my best friends (I'm the best man for one of their weddings if that's any indication!)

We had 2 working showers on the floor which were more than adequate, never had to wait to use one once.

The common room is a little pants but there is a free pool table there.. you can just go to guy's bar anyway which is literally <5mins away.

Some security staff are really nice, some aren't but you'll find out pretty soon.

Internet is all wireless and sometimes dodgy but I got dl rates of about 300kb/s and it was completely unrestricted (p2p works for example) unlike some halls.

oh and the sinks block if you vommit in them so use the toilet!

I'm not gonna lie but GDSA is nicer, however, wolfson has cleaners that clean up everything (other than your room) whereas GDSA has kitchen checks and their cleaners would sooner lop money of your deposit than hoover the hallway.

So in conclusion I would say wolfson is great value of money for its location (directly above the greenwood theatre which is where common year one have almost all lectures and most 1year medics). Sure you don't have a shower and toilet in your room, but how hard is it to take a 2-15sec walk to one that gets cleaned for you?

Useful post, thanks.

I just wonder if you can have wired internet as well, is there a socket where you can plug in a network cable?

Reply 35

Great post Vanthel, thanks.

Reply 36

No wired i'm afraid

Hi Vanthel

Great info you've given. Just the kind of info I was looking for about Wolfson House.

I just got to know a few days back that I'll be at Wolfson House for the 2008-2009 session. Have accepted the offer.

I'm a LLM student for 2008-2009 from Delhi, India. Hope to meet you at Wolfson if you're still there.

My first preference was Stamford Street Apartments, but after reading your posts, I'm happy I got my 2nd preference which was Wolfson House. In retrospect, the rooms seem much bigger than SSA. Now I'm not worried about finding place to keep my guitar, studio monitors (which I'll buy in London) and guitar effects unit. :woo: :woo: :woo:

Only reason I chose SSA as my 1st preference was because of the ensuite facilities and the proximity to the Strand campus. But how much time do we actually spend in the bathroom in any case. LOL.  Plus walking from Wolfson to Strand will keep me fit.

Being a post grad student and also mature at the same time , I suppose I'll be given a room on the 13th, 14th or 15th floor. Is that correct?

Would you also happen to know how much extra it would cost to use the swimming pool and the Gym facilities? Plus what stuff should one bring for the room? I believe they don't supply any pillows, bedsheets etc.

Any advice on what to bring would be appreciated.

Cheers

Afraid I've moved out now. Will try to answer your questions as accurately as possible.
one thing with the guitars etc, if you have them delivered the accomodation office people will be scared that you will play it at full volume (which is quite possible!).. In which case make up some bogus story like "I'm never going to unpackage it, it's a present for my uncle's 50th" or something, that's what I did!

Wolfson => strand along the river is a nice walk, takes about 20-25 mins iirc.

Postgrads are generally on those top floors, which all have refurbed kitchens etc so that should be nice! Mature students that are undergrads are littered around other floors, I had 3 on my floor.

I don't know of anyone that used the pool, but I know it comes with the guy's gym membership. Everyone I knew used the gym at Waterloo (you get a nice warmup run there and back as well!) since they have a good deal for students, although no swimming pool to my knowledge.

They do provide a bedding pack which is just a pillow and duvet (which are pretty crap!) I got my own, but you will definately need your own sheets. You get a lamp as well.

You will need plates, cutlery, pots, pans etc Washing Powder.. but you can easily get most this stuff when you get here from tesco pretty cheap and saves on travelling.

oh and a note for everyone is that you cannot access the internet until you have registered and gotten your list of usernames and passwords (you need your email login details).

Hi Vanthel

Thanks for the detailed reply. Sad to hear that you've moved out. :frown:
Would have liked to jam with you, with my little knowledge on the guitar. lol.

Well I'm going to bring my guitar with me from Delhi. Got an Ibanez RG 570 electric guitar and a Digitech GNX 4 effects unit, so won't want to leave those behind. The Ibanez is my most prized possession. I'll convince the acco people that I'll use headphones. LOL

I think London is made for walking, at least that's what I've heard. 25 mins to Strand from Wolfson House is nothing actually. Will explore both the gyms and then decide which one to join.

I suppose the top floors will be nice with a good view. Only problem will be during the fire drills. haha.

Thankfully a friend of mine who was at LSE has left behind a lot of his stuff for me, which includes soaps, utensils, extension cords, a duvet, stationary, kettle and some other stuff. Will save some money on that. :woo: :woo:

Will have to manage with no internet for the first 6-7 days since I'm reaching London on 09/09/08.

So where are you living now? Hope to meet up with you when I reach KCL. Do you think it's a good idea to buy a cycle there? Or is it always raining?

Cheers
