That's when I'm arriving too! Are you going to the international orientation?

Also, did you receive your offer in the post or by email? I'm a postgrad too. I was told we wouldn't hear until August, but if others are getting their offers now...

I'll be living far up north in zone 2/3 :/ but at least it will be cheap!

Some do get a crappy bike to get to the strand but I don't see the point of that; I got one as I cycle to rowing which is a good 10 miles each way so it made sense as it was quicker than taking the train.

Yeah you can walk most places in london within zone 1 without overdoing it imo. Walking back home drunk was one of my hobbies

oh and after enough fire alarms you will stop leaving the building and ignore the threats of room searches, we never got one search and about 20 threats last year lol

Hi

Yes I'm going for the international orientation, that's why I'm reaching on Sept 9, 2008.

I got to know of the accommodation by email and they attached a PDF documents (3 pages) with a Form A. I sent them a scanned copy of Form A, which is the acceptance form and have also sent a hard copy of Form A to them.

For those persons who applied online for accommodation before June 30, 2008, KCL should be informing them by middle/ end of July 2008. I'm surprised that they've told you August. August is a little late to get to know about where you're living.

All the best. I'm sure you'll get to know in a few days.

Cheers

Hi Vanthel

Well Zone 2/ 3 should definitely be cheaper, so you'll save money.

Cycling 20 miles both ways sounds like a lot. You're probably very fit.

I guess walking back drunk will become one of my hobbies too.

Maybe they won't check during the fire alarms especially if I'm on the 13th, 14th or 15th floor. can't imagine anyone walking up that many floors to check.

Someone was asking me whether it's possible to get a single room within 500 Pounds a month in Zone 1 living privately and not in college accommodation? What do you think?

Cheers

for a 1 bedroom flat? probably pretty difficult. There are some ex council flats that are normally about 3 bedrooms (in reality, the living room is converted to a bedroom) which can work out as little as £1,020pcm = £85 per person, per week.

For a house share etc then, £500pcm for a room is probably pretty easy since most decently located zone 1 houses tend to be between £100-£125 per person per week.

Hope that makes sense

Hi Vanthel

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't talking about a 1 bedroom flat. That would be too expensive imo. I think the person who asked was probably thinking of a shared flat and one room in that shared flat.

Will pass on your feedback. Thanks a lot.

Never mind, I just got my email too! :woo: Thanks for the tip about scanning Form A though - I was going to fax it but I think scanning makes more sense.

Hi

So where have you got accommodation and what subject are you studying?

I scanned it and then sent it by hard copy also. Later on I received a mail from them saying that my email confirmation and the scanned document were sufficient and I shouldn't worry if my hard copy Form A did not reach them by 18th. But I'm still not sure whether they need a hard copy acceptance.

You can check with them and see if you really need to send the hard copy Form A or whether the scanned document and the email confirmation is sufficient for them.

I got intercollegiate, and I'm studying "Digital Humanities" (don't worry, no one else has heard of it either). Basically, I'll be learning about making 3D computer reconstructions of historical sites and objects, digital archiving, etc.

I did both the scanning and the hard copy too, just in case. Thanks! I'll probably see you in September!

Reply 49

Great. See you in London. "Digital Humanities" sounds interesting. I've always wanted to fool around with 3D and animation stuff but never got down to it. LOL.

Maybe one day I'll do that after I retire from Law.

LOL. Take heart, you'll be glad to live on the lower floors when the fire alarms go off at 4am and you have to walk down the stairs (and back up again)...

Reply 53

oh yeah!!
HAHA!
lol
(i didnt mean to be the evil when i said my"haha")

but..
cant we just stay in our rooms when the fire alarms go off? (or hide under our beds.. if ppl check the rooms?)

annnnd

does anyone actually get given rooms on the lower floors??
cause i stupidly mentioned issues i might have with stairs.. so i am convinced i'm gonna get the 2nd floor (all on my own!!) :s

I was there this year and enjoyed every second of it. Sure the rooms aren't massive but they are bigger than GDS and I liked it (I have a lot of stuff, I kept a bike, cello, bass guitar and amp in there and still managed to have 3 people sleep over..).

While you may go into your room thinking it's crap, mine looked great once I covered the walls in posters.

The social aspect of wolfson is amazing, get to know everyone on your floor asap as they will be your first circle of friends and my floormates are some of my best friends (I'm the best man for one of their weddings if that's any indication!)

We had 2 working showers on the floor which were more than adequate, never had to wait to use one once.

The common room is a little pants but there is a free pool table there.. you can just go to guy's bar anyway which is literally <5mins away.

Some security staff are really nice, some aren't but you'll find out pretty soon.

Internet is all wireless and sometimes dodgy but I got dl rates of about 300kb/s and it was completely unrestricted (p2p works for example) unlike some halls.

oh and the sinks block if you vommit in them so use the toilet!

I'm not gonna lie but GDSA is nicer, however, wolfson has cleaners that clean up everything (other than your room) whereas GDSA has kitchen checks and their cleaners would sooner lop money of your deposit than hoover the hallway.

So in conclusion I would say wolfson is great value of money for its location (directly above the greenwood theatre which is where common year one have almost all lectures and most 1year medics). Sure you don't have a shower and toilet in your room, but how hard is it to take a 2-15sec walk to one that gets cleaned for you?

Which floor are u at? I just saw this video on youtube abt a drunk person at wolfson. Not exactly the most positive image of a resident there.

I am not in London. There's no way for me to tell which of the accommodation is better with so many sources of information!

Reply 55

I stayed at GDSA last year. It was generally nice but socially it sucked a little. There was a really nice common room which nobody used :-(. I've been allocated to Wolfson this year, are there any second years here? Anyway theres a video on youtube of a guy filming his room at Wolfson if any of you are curious as to what its like inside.

I was on 3rd. It's university, drunk people are normal and you will get them almost everywhere. I know people in GDS last year that had done stuff like bring a tree home and plant it in a pot in the kitchen (followed swiftly by throwing it into someone's door) to taping bin liners over someone's door frame to freak them up when they get up.

Reply 57

Who's accommodation offer was for Wolfson then!? Mine is, was my second choice and am quite pleased!

Reply 58

would wolfson be a good pick for a law student? if not, any advice?

: )

Reply 59

Quite a few law students live here and I haven't heard them complain, tbh the halls are what you make of them (gosh that sounds awful-they really are not that bad)
Wolson isn't too far from the strand and waterloo
