Hi all,

I have to write an essay for my moby d*ck course at university on moby d*ck I'm allowed to make up whatever question I want and can compare it (themes or characters or both) to any other book. Could anyone give me suggestions as to which books I could compare with Moby d*ck and why? I'm really stumped. Thank you!

I'd compare it to another big classic - "Crime and punishment" by Dostoyevsky. The obvious choice (yawn) is to compare Melville to Hemingway's "the old man and the sea" - both American landmarks about fellas that get obsessed by a big fish. But you're better than that. Go for "Crime and Punishment" and your comparison is essentially monomania. Protagonists who are obsessed by a single idea, and who are, ultimately defeated by it.
