There are a lot of chavs, but I've never had any trouble. Don't really think it changes the atmosphere either

Stay away from union street.

Its better than most citys
plymouth is full of 15 yr old chavs, but they are heardly a threat! The uni itself is fine, don't worry!

My bro's there; he says parts of the city are quite rough, but if you are sensible and avoid certain places you will be fine. Plus, most of the "chavs" will just be harmless 14 year olds in track suits - not a pleasant sight, but certainly not a major threat.

Everything else I have heard about the place is positive.

They are all mainly in certain areas that you wouldn't normally go to. Like the others said, they are all 15 year old rejects

Just carry a knife and you'll be fine!

This is a joke, knifes are bad mmmmmmmkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
just stay away from swilly (north prospect) or you'll get egged
There are chavs. But no more than any other area! There are rough areas, but like every city. Also as everyone else said they are hardly dangerous, usually just 14 year olds at the back of the bus or hanging round town in tracksuits! I really wouldn't worry about it at all!

...Plymouth is pretty much safe, the nights you go out on, the locals dont anyway, so its rare you'll encounter anything problematic.

What is this with people refering to locals being hostile?! I live in plymouth and I have never encountered anyone being off with students!
There are quite a lot of 'chavs' in the plym but in the student bubble (I don't mean that in an offensive way!) you're really not going to notice them.
Actually the main thing about Plymouth really is that it is quite a 'working class' place compared to the rest of the South West, mostly because of Plymouth's naval background. It's not a bad thing, it's just less gentrified. However with the expansion of the uni as a main employer and the investment the city has seen ie. the mall, that does seem to be changing. Basically, Plymouth isn't Bath but you're not going to get knifed either!!
Apparently the gangs in Devonpool(?) (or some name like that) are bad, some guy sat at his window one day just shooting people he didn't like the look of with a shot gun... no idea where that is tho tbh!
It's Devonport (devonpool! hehe!) and you won't be going anywhere near the rougher bits like that as a student... I don't think most go further than mutley/st judes most of the time

It's no worse that any other urban sprawl that you're likely to visit. 'Locals' on the most part tend to keep themselves to themselves, but you do tend to pick up and anti-student vibe at times -- ironic considering that the university is one of the main drivers of the local economy.

Generally, you will see chavs around no matter where you go, such as Lipson, Mutley, Union Street, etc. but if you're enjoying a student night, you tend not to notice them anyway.

If you're that concerned about finding yourself in a spot of bother, just avoid Union Street on Saturday nights, and stick to the "bubble" which the university provides. The only time you really tend to notice the chavs are when you visit places on non-student sponsored nights, or if you decide to stay over summer when all the students inevitably go home.

Use your common sense and you'll be fine.
