Hello fellow chemists,
It is Skrrrrrrr with yet another chemistry question to tickle your brain cells

Why is copper a transition metal if the definition of said transition metal is

' A metal which forms one or more stable ions with partially filled D -orbitals'

The electronic configuration of copper is 4s1 3d10 with a very very FULL 3D orbital. Yes, I know the 4s orbital is half full, but that is not encompassed in the definition of a transition metal.

Transition metals are perpetually transitioning me into an abyss of befuddlement.

Surely copper has snuck its way in and really belongs to scandium and zinc, the unloved outcasts of the transition family. What is going on?
