How do I show in an essay that I had the idea before I then found research on it? If I reference the source of research in the next sentence when I discuss stuff from that then it looks like I didn't have the idea for the previous thing even though I did and that is what led me to the bit of research...
This is for my EPQ by the way.

In your essay, all you put is your findings and conclusion.
Talk about the processes, including having the idea then conducting the research in your Summary and Reflection which is the final part of the production log on Project-Q.
I went for Easter entry this year, and got loads of my marks for this section
We were advised to answer the following in as much detail as possible:
Why did you choose this topic? (mention this in your presentation too!)
How did you arrive at your final title?
What have you learned about the topic?
What skills have you developed?
Pros & cons of processes you used?
Strengths and weaknesses of techniques used?
What went well?
What didn't go as well?
What you might do differently?
Advise for future EPQ candidates?
The Summary and Reflection can get quite long, but don't worry about it (we were told 500-1000 words, mine was 3500+ and was all marked)
So, I'd advise not to include it in your essay at all, and that the timeline you went through could be explained in your presentation and in the Summary and Reflection on Project-Q.
Does this help any?
