Hi, I'm currently retaking my Alevels as a private candidate. I've been struggling with sociology and it would be a major help if anyone could give me some tips on how to write notes and mind maps as well as how to revise sociology other than practicing pyp. My exam board is CIE although there are times where I refer to AQA boards for information.

Hi, I’m in my second year of A Levels and I do sociology too! I find quizlets are the absolute best for sociology, they work amazingly for this subject rather than any other! You can really easily learn key terms and key sociologists this way! Also, doing practice exam questions (even just planning them) works really well to build up your technique! Good luck!

I've done some sociology - I always advise students to make grids of sociologists and their studies.

Make a table with the headings: Sociologist, Study, What is the study about?, What does it link to?, Criticisms.
Make a table for each unit with the key sociologists and then revise from that.

E.g.
Sociologist: Milliband (1973)
Study: Media Ideology
What is it about?: The role of the media being to shape how we think and how we live. Media owners provide a narrow view. Transmit conservative ideology.
What does it link to?: Ownership and control, Conservative and conformist views, marxist perspective.
Criticisms: Pluralists claim there are audiences opinions are already dominated before accessing the media, audiences choose which media to view.

Completing a grid is not only helping you remember the sociologists but thinking of criticisms helps your ability to analyse their views and having this knowledge and skill will be crucial in the exam.
