Data Entry kicks ass

People like to bash data entry as a job, but let me just tell you why it's a great job if you're looking for work over the summer! OK, so you **** your eyes up and get repetitive strain injury, BUT:
- Normally the other temps are finding it as boring as you = good bonding coffee breaks and lunches
- It's quiet. You can sit there, slumped in your chair, in silence if you want. Or listen to music/the radio. Beats (IMO) working in a brightly lit, chaotic supermarket.
- Pretty well paid,, cosnidering a monkey could do it.
- Comfy environment. Free tea, coffee, often a nice plush office to work in
- Surf the net whenever you feel like it
- Don;t have to deal with people. If you're antisocial, this is The. Best. Job. No annoying customers/customer service. The office manager will barely ever check up on you because...a monkey could do it. Office staff who aren't temps will generally feel too 'above' you to really bother with you. But if you do want to talk, other bored temps will be there to comfort you (see first point).
- No uniform. Most offices don't even care if their data entry 'clerks' turn up in jeans and a holey jumper.

It's time to get a data entry job folks.

I've been doing data entry jobs since January. It's a hoot.

I had one a while ago, I just listened to music and sat on MSN all day. It was quite a good job but so repetitive. I prefer my new job doing audio typing, it's the same thing but with more skill and variables... and most importantly higher pay.

 Yes please. I work in tesco so these things appeal to me,

Yeah, I don't know why people bash it so much. The only problem I have with doing it is the eye thing, really makes them dry/sensitive. But otherwise...yes it's boring. But I was more bored working for Tesco's. And the pay was worse and I had to deal with real live people.

Elipsis what does audio typing involve?

Reply 7

I'd always wanted to do that (as a temp job), might go for it then (y) thanks in_vogue

Isn't that quite boring? I would die of that boredom probably... :p: Seriosly: What's the wage (roughly)? Thanks

It's a decent job but it's so damn boring.

My friend just got a data entry job recently, she told me she barely does nothing, and even got to play with the manager's dogs one day =/

I want!

If you want a data entry job, a lot of the universities have online job vacancy sites. In my experience, lots of employers looking for data entry people advertise on those.

It suits some people, not others! I have worked in data entry for about 6months, and then left it for a retail job, working for a high street mobile phone job.

1)Perks are MUCH MUCH BETTER!

2)OK fine, in data entry jobs id get alot of vouchers for hitting targets...in retail im getting easy commission, plus the occasional incentives like free ipods for selling the most etc! So far iv won a free ipod and nintendo ds, plus an okish pay as you go mobile phone!

3) Yep you have to deal with annoying customers, but id say out of the 100 customers i serve, only 5 at most are real tight ********** who just can stop complaining! And il find 60% of them are really fun and interesting to serve! I joke around with my customers, just mess around, make them laugh etc, so they dont feel intimidated by a sales person, and its amazing how interesting some of them are, and they joke back etc, its really nice interacting with them, and serving them! Then the remaining 35% of them are just normal customers, want to buy whatever and get out asap! So yea, id say i love the whole serving customers side of it, i used to get bored like maaaaaaad in the data entry job, there is only so much i could talk about to the guy sitting next to me!

4) Retail environment was fantastic in building my skills and self confidence! Before as a person i was much quieter, not as confident...now id say it has 100% helped me not only develop my sales skills, and problem solving skills, but confidence and people skills!

5) This was my main reason for leaving the data entry job...i just HATED the repetitive task of typing the same forms over and over and over again, just with different customers names, and details!! In the retail environment every single day is different, you never know what the hecks going to happen that day, get a mental customer who just shouts at you for 1 hour non stop.....or get a fantastic customer who goes out and actually buys you a huge box of chocolates (iv had both happen to me...must say i prefer the latter personally!!!)

But yea, it totally does depend on your personal choices, i cant sit still for more then 1 min , and get bored within a second lol, so data entry was not for me!! Now that im in retail for a part time job, id never go else where!

Dude, get me it then.

I have an interview for a data entry job tomorrow. Eep! Really hope I get it, I work at Sainsbury's at the moment and am desperately sick of the general public!

Reply 17

could someone who has a data entry job (or has had one) explain how a typical day would go? oo and also what do data entry jobs require (level of qualifications, experience etc) if anything?

thanks

Reply 18

I think they prefer university students but I got one in my A Level year so I guess it depends. They like to know you can type fast, can use all Microsoft Office stuff (Word, Excel, especially Excel) and often they like to know you've had some office experience.

But many places will just take you with no experience, so no worries.

Normally data entry is a temp job - if the company has sent out surveys to the public for example, they need people to take those paper surveys and put them all into an Excel sheet. On your first day someone will show you the forms/surveys/whatever you're going to be inputting, and will do one or two with you.

Then you basically spend the whole day typing all the info into a spread sheet. There really isn't much variation.
