Hi guys!

Diksha here!

So I just did a chemistry past paper and the question was:'A student wanted to use electrolysis to silver plate a metal spoon. Give one reason why metal spoons are sometimes silver plated.'
My response to this was:'to make them less reactive'.
The mark scheme says:'to improve appearance/make it look nice,TO PREVENT CORROSION,TO MAKE IT MORE DURABLE,cheaper than solid silver'.
Personally,I mark myself quite harshly but I was just wondering if I could get the mark for my answer as it is hinting at the fact that it will prevent corrosion (which is what the mark scheme says).

Let me know what you guys think!

Thank you so much in advance!

Your answer could imply the capitalised marking points you mentioned, but doesn't prove to the examiner that you know so. A student could've easily wrote 'to make them less reactive' with no knowledge of corrosion. Corrosion is a specific reaction, so you must be equally specific in your answer as silver plating does indeed prevent corrosion, but doesn't necessarily make materials less reactive.

Increased durability is an effect of corrosion resistance, so is also a specific answer. If you want to score the marks, make sure you're not being vague and answer contextually.
