I do IB Maths at Standard Level currently. However I've never been an amazing Math student...managed to get an A for my GCSEs but that's a completely different story because as we all know IB is way more advanced. The IB workload is massive and I am struggling a lot with Math Standard..am currently at a Level 3/4 and I can't afford to get such a low grade because I want to apply to universities like LSE/UCL/King's/Manchester so I need at least 38 pts but I don't think I will be able to pull off more than a low 5 with Standard Level.
Which is why I really want to switch to Math Studies because I will definitely be able to get a high 5 or a 6 for it (I've been told its like Math at GCSE Level). What's holding me back is though apparently universities, especially such prestigious ones like LSE/UCL/King's and Manchester do not get a good impression of applicants who have done Math Studies as it's supposed to be Math at a really basic level compared to other IB Subjects.
Is it true that if I do Math Studies, my application will be under a disadvantage compared to applicants who have done Maths at Higher/Standard..even if I am applying for a course like Law? Would it break my application...or does it not matter what level I do Math in or what subjects I do as long as I get those 38 pts required?
hehe i have the same thought in my mind. Im also doing math studies. I do not think it matter for law (since it has nothing to do with math). What matters for them is our hl subjects. they should be related to law ( ex. history, not chemistry on hl). and of course the overall points, which should not be lower than 38 GOOD LUCK!!!

Related to law? What school subjects are related to law? I disagree with this very strongly-whilst some subjects may develop your potential more than others, there are no 'subjects' for law, despite what everyone on this forum says. Just because everyone seems to do english and history doesnt mean they are required for a law degree. I admit that histroy is better than media studies for a law degree (although I have never done media studies..so i cant say for sure...) but histroy is definitely not required.
Well, it clearly says THAT SUBJECTS SHOULD BE RELEVANT TO LAW!!!! just think logically..... how can someone who studied chemistry know what happened in Europe in last hundred years, and why was NATO formed? history is very important for people who study law. while the subjects you have...

I still think its more important to choose subjects you enjoy, rather than their relevance for a law degree.
How is someone going to know about the formation of nato..they read a book! Your argument is the same for any subject..how is someone going to learn about commercial law without economics...? Answer: they read the ft

Please help!
You'll probably be able to get a 7 too. DO CHANGE TO MATH STUDIES. It doesn't matter for law, the only university that I've heard is sometimes a bit snobbish about the whole math studies thing is LSE (not even Oxbridge are), but that's perhaps just rumours.
i did math studies and got a 7 for november'07 papers (and i switched from maths SL to math studies SL halfway through my IB year 1, to boost my overall grades), and i got offers from 3 universities and still waiting on 2 more, so i doubt it matters that much during admissions.
