I'm going to be living around the Lambeth Palace area next year and I was wondering if that, and the areas around it (Kennington, Southwark, Waterloo, & Elephant/Castle), have good/ok/bad reputations?

Help would be appreciated.

Kennington and Waterloo can be alright, I suppose. The other two are worth avoiding, from what I know.

it has all ben blown out of proportion by the media, they're scare mongering, yes there have been the stabbing and shooting but it doesn't apply to the general public, as long as you steer clear of the drugs and that jazz you'll be fine. The areas you've listed are hardly bad you could do much worse if you go further south ie. croydon, streatham, mitcham

I usually don't like going out at night or whenever it gets dark and I want to have as strong a sense of security as possible that's all.

there's no such thing as a universally bad area in London (apart from maybe Peckham lol), each neighbourhood has its skanky spots to avoid, some just have more than others.

it really depends on how far you live from the nearest tube station/bus stop/main road. Elephant is a bit **** at night, especially the end heading towards Camberwell, but as long as you're streetwise and not walking down loads of residental roads or estates by yourself at night you'll be fine.

Southwark/Elephant and Castle are fine. In fact I love it here. I walk home on my own in the dead of night all the time. It's FINE.

True. I know a guy who lived in Croydon. I asked him the same questions and all he said was that, "don't be at the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong people and you'll be fine". Every area will have some bad spots to avoid. You do that and you should be safe.

I'd say those areas are considered by the general public and portrayed by the media as being the worst in London. Most of the gang related teenage stabbings that are getting so much press lately occur in South London. Whether that will actually affect your quality of life is of course a matter of individual circumstance.
