I was just wondering, if you made up an obscure case study would the examiner really know that you made it up? I mean, surely they dont have the time to look up every case study they come across when they're marking maybe 30 papers at a time, so would it be possible, even if a bit lazy, to make up a very believable case study in the exam for a topic with hundreds of potential case studies like hazards or changing places?

That is possible, however it comes with risk and obviously you must ensure this number is realistic. You also have to hope that the examiner doesn’t know this case study and picks up on this. This should be last resort and not a plan to do prior to the exam.
