A question came up last year asking to give the formula of Calcium nitrate saying it contains Ca2+ and NO3-

The answer is Ca(NO3)2, but how would you work this out?

You need to work out the ion value (+/-) Then ensure that they cancel each other out so the total charge is zero. E.G. Calcium has a charge of 2+ and NO3 has a charge of -1. You would need to of the NO3 -1 to make the total charge equal to zero.
