So, I know a lot of you guys on here play this game (at least I think so :s-smilie:). Anyways, I downloaded it recently but when it loads I get the error "Failed to initialize VRES256 screen". Anyone ever got this error before or know how to fix it?

I'm running vista on my laptop, btw. But I've changed the compatibility settings around with no luck.

Only help I could find with a google search was on a French abandonware site...moderator there has posted something along the lines of:
"Update the drivers for your graphics card. If that doesn't work, re-install the game and when it asks you if you want to install DirectX, click on Yes. The old version will have some things that newer versions don't have (because they're redundant or whatever)". Updating your drivers is always a good idea, and you can always update DirectX again very simply

Maybe on the program properties you have to change the screen size and colours?

What about picking up a copy from Game or something? It must only cost a fiver by now. Did you torrent the game because the torrent could be dodgy.

From what I've read, the same problem will most likely happen with the CD. I'll probably buy the game if I see it about and then if it doesnt work I'll just have to use the family computer, (By that I mean my brothers computer  )
Sorry dudes, but there isn't a way to sort out the problem as of yet. Personally, I think it's due to some graphics cards being "too modern". When I reformatted my PC, populoud the beginning worked fine until I reinstalled my current graphics card, which is much better than the integrated one I have.

Here's a quote from the "sold out" website giving their answer:

A: This is a known problem that is caused by an incompatibility issue with your SiS Mirage 3 integrated graphics. At this point in time there is no fix for this, but we are hoping to address a patch that will solve this some time in the future. In the meantime, we can exchange your version of Theme Hospital for an alternative title of equivalent value from our product range if you wish. Otherwise, we can only recommend you upgrade you graphics to a non-integrated solution, you try and return the product to its place of purchase or else try playing the game on an alternative system.

Like I said, they think it's integration, I think it's overpoweredness.
