Hey,

How did it go?

I personally think it was a really hard paper. Firstly the extract question were so easy to get wrong if you talked about attitudes towards autocrats ie Alexander II and III instead of attitudes towards autocracy the concept. Khrushchev came up...AGAIN, and the town question pshhh what was that! I have also heard of people not knowing what stagnant means yikes!
All in all i have mixed feelings i didn't finish my conclusions for the extracts and nearly ran out of time on the questions! All in all i'm hoping for low grade boundaries.

I struggled with the extracts too - I thought it was tricky to pull out the arguments in relation to the question because it was quite specific. Also my essays were covered in asterisks so I think the examiner is gonna hate me lol. Praying for low grade boundaries!

I (and all my classmates) thought the paper was pretty tough. The extract question was weirdly specific for such a long period of history (40 years! What?!) and I thought the arguments in them were kind of hard to find. I avoided the first essay question (growth of towns affecting societal issues), found the second one okay (how Marxist ideology transformed industry) and the third essay question I found pretty so-so, I struggled to think of lots of points for it (political stagnation in USSR).

Overall, a pretty horrible paper. Fingers crossed for lenient marking and low grade boundaries because I ran out of time and had to rush out parts of my answers. Hooray for continuing to write while exam time is up and trying to pretend like you're filling in the front of your extra paper lol.

XD oh same, my hand writing was not good. i couldn't even spell pobedenostsev when it was right in front of me, and yeah they were so balanced ugh! I was hoping for some nice obvious propaganda, fingers crossed the grade boundaries are super super low!

Definitely! I ran out of time too one of my extracts ends like mid way! 0-0 well here's hoping for the best yeah i didn't mind the second question except for the fact that right as i finished it i thought of a much better way of structuring it and yeah the stagnation one was weird i just put about destalinisation and the new party policy stuff like that it was definitely shorter than my other one though. I just really didn't want to do the town one. I have only come across like one person who did it. and darn should have thought of that too XD i was to scared the invigilator would catch me haha

The essays were the most cancerous set of essay questions I have ever seen... Interestingly enough, however, I found the sources alright, so did a lot of my mates. But yeah hoping for low boundaries or praying that AQA has not messed up paper 2 too...
Like literally where do they get them from! Honestly aqa just pick the most obscure thing that nobody revises and decided. Yep sounds about right

Honestly thought it was a pretty decent paper

Felt like I was repeating myself a lot on the sources, they mostly said the same thing (Alexander II had a reformist attitude, III wanted to strengthen autocracy)

Skipped the towns question because thats a ****in lol question

The Marxism one was relatively easy, did about war communism, 5 year plans and forced collectivisation for and NEP/state capitalism against

Political stagnation I found the easiest, mainly wrote about how the dictatorship never really fell with Khrushchev coming to power and his destalinisation attempts largely failed

overall a decent paper, could be worse could be better

I was an industry based question, why talk about collectivisation (agriculture)? Or am I wrong?
Indeed I didnt mention it much, maybe one or two lines in relation to them becoming the food supply of the industry. Mostly focused on the 5 year plans. Just came to my head when I was writing my post. Also mentioned agriculture a small amount in my counter paragraph when discussing the NEP, but again focused mostly on industry.

I wrote about pretty much the same but said there wasn't stagnation in the party though there was outside, not that it matters really so long as you argue your point XD at least that means i'm on the right track. Yeah the sources were basically the same thing over and over, the only positive in that was that i guess you could pick a different reform to talk about each time? I did about two pros and two cons for each so hopefully that enough, aimed for three but there wasn't enough time.
Again don't know what they where thinking with the town question
Glad it went well for you though!

Same my main focus for agreeing was based on the FYPs. Did you talk about how WC was detrimental to industry or is it just me?

I talked a lot about collectivisation as a policy which fuelled industrialisation by providing food and money, not sure if that right though

I tried not to focus on the outcomes of the policies as it wasn't the focus of the question. I focused on the driving factor behind the policies and how they were affected by marxist/socialist ideals. I put one line in about it not being beneficiary but didnt really do much beyond that in terms of the results of WC.

I did an additional paragraph on whether or not Russian industry had *actually* transformed or not because I had some time left over and thought it was best to include a third point rather than not.

Same here, I said WC transformed industry but negatively so. Then I debated whether the 5YPs & NEP was Marxist ideology or not- as I felt like it was fairly clear they both 'transformed' industry.

For the stagnation question, I wrote on a similar line (High Stalinism, de-Stalinisation, rise of role of Presidium, role of Bukharin, attempted 1957 and successful 1964 ousting of Kh).

It was only for that specific question, finished my for and against in about 37 minutes so I had time for a quick paragraph on another point before my conclusion

The exam as a whole I had about a minute to spare to look for spelling mistakes

So that paper was absolutely awful. I did the towns one and the Marxism one.
Had no idea what to write about for the towns one so literally made loads of stuff up 😂
The Marxism one and the extract one went really good though so we shall have to see

I did question 4 and think I interpreted the idea of stagnating wrong (I thought it meant the state being less prominent in the USSR if they were stagnating, not about progression). If otherwise it was a really good essay and well substantiated/concluded but I misinterpreted the question, how many marks do you think I could get out of 25?

Agreed. On the Russian industry one I wrote about collectivisation of grain in order to increase exports in order to expand Russian industry. Apparently that might b wrong ;(
