Thinking of going 'teetotal'

I'm quite a big drinker, not a regular drinker but when I do drink it is probably more than I should. I read an article today in The Guardian's education supplement about how more people are going teetotal at university and I was quite suprised to see the numbers are rising.

I'm 17 in a couple of days and I go to University in 2009 so I've still got a whole year but I am very tempted to go teetotal. Most of my friends drink at the weekends but we don't go for the usual clubbing scene, we go to pubs or gigs instead. I don't really like the taste of alcohol (I only drink white wine or pear cider) and I don't really have enough money to always spend it on drink but I do feel like I have to socially.

Does anyone have any advice/experiences about going teetotal?

Advice? Don't drink :p:

Sounds simple to me xD. I'm sure you can have as much fun as your mates even while clubbing, etc.

Try it, see how it goes. Im not a heavy drinker aswell, i'd have the odd cocktail once a month or so, but i had such a bad experience a few months ago, and ive found my health has been a lot better, concentration etc

I think you'll be fine - I'm mates with loads of people who don't drink but tbh you don't notice when you go out because they get so hyper with the atmosphere lol!

You might get a few questions in the first week or two but after that it doesn't bother anyone. :p:

Being teetotal is no big deal.
I don't drink that much myself. Actually, I haven't drunk since my 18th, and that was in February.

Try it, you might even find you enjoy it.
... besides which, soft drinks are cheaper

If you can make it through freshers week...

In the clubs I go to, its more expensive to not drink than it is to drink.
Like, I don't drink regularly but when I do I drink wayy to much, I think I could be teetotal quite easily, and I would if it were cheaper, but, its just not. :s-smilie:

depends whether you can trust whoever you are with. if you think theyll get you to a half decent bed, go for it. but believe me the mornings after can be an experience. oh yeh nd have a wingman to tell you what you did later. unless they happen to go the way with you

and i was not adocating getting drunk. i was merely suggesting that you should try it. one of those "things to do once before you die"

I'm the same. Had so many bad experiences with drinking and I don't even like the taste of it! I'm a huge social drinkner (binge drinker basically lol) but if I'm not out - I don't drink.

I'm giving it a rest for a few months and I know it will be an easy thing to do for me. Find other things to do, it'll be easy!

I read that article too! I found it pretty surprising tbh, I've noticed a rise in people drinking from what I've experienced (But then I'm in my last year of school, not uni)

So long as you don't go on about being teetotal no-one will mind. I say "go on" because I know some tee-totalers who make SUCH a big deal of the fact that they don't drink. Kind of like people who go on and on about how they're not going to have sex before marriage.
Try it and see

Worst Person Ever Award goes to..

Quite contradictory as well.
Those that require alcohol to make themselves interesting are the boring ones.

What? Don't be a quitter.

Make a stand and don't give in. Well done my son!

i have never had a drop of alcohol in my life and im 20 now! People do ask me why i dont drink? but i just tell them that i dont see any appeal in it! and i love going out to the pub or clubbing or to gigs as much as the next person and i have just as much if not more fun than the others! i have more confidence than some of them to get up and dance ( i dont need drink to encourage me). I enjoy myself more because im not boking all over the place or lying unconcious on the floor. And I dont get a hangover in the morning and can remember every thing that i have done! Another great thing is when ppl buy rounds they buy you soft drinks but dont expect you to buy a round because you 'dont drink'. i would tell you to consider it. you dont become a bore as all my friends accpeted me for who i am by not drinking and a few of them even come out on nites and dont drink with me and say they have a better time!!

I dont like the taste of alcohol and therefore dont drink that much at all and no one really cares.
With regards to the comment its cheaper, Ive found it to be equally if not more expensive not to drink at uni especially as all the offers and things are on alcohol and not soft drinks.

OP: Do whatever you think is best for you, but there is really no stigma attached to not drinking imo.
