I'm not sure about Exeter...sorry

But I do know that Nottingham has a pretty good reputation academically (I've been looking at doing law and they're in the top 10 in the country). My cousin's there studying law at the moment and he seems to like it and have a good social life.

I don't know if that's very helpful!

Hi,

I'm just interested to see what people think of Nottingham University reputation-wise.

I know it hasn't got the reputation of the likes of Oxford, University College London, Warwick and Durham etc. but is it seen as a very middle-of-the-road Univeristy, or is the academic reputation still very good?

Also, what about Exeter University?

Thanks  x

It is pretty good, and comes behind the top 6 along with bristol and durham. Also depends on the course you study. Economics at notts is pretty good - generally in top 6/7 - but other courses are not very good at all.

Nottingham has been covered, but I'm pretty sure Exeter has a rather good reputation, to say the least.

decently good and reputable Uni with few skepticism to be firmly in top 15 nationally, but hard to say about its position in the world.
Reply 5
no its not. its ranked 63 worldwide. it was 77 last year.

Isn't that good enough? What more can you demand for?

Both Nottingham and Exeter are very good universities, and you'll do well from either regardless of your chosen course. Don't forget, however, that both are very different in terms of their location, atmosphere, and modules available to students - so if you're having trouble deciding between the two, take this into consideration.
I went to visit both for open days this year and i have to admit - Nottingham had a much nicer and more modest atmosphere than Exeter.
At the end of the day - its not all about academic status really, it's about what you want in the place you'll be living in for 3 - 7 years. I don't know... seems kinda strange to me to base something purely on reputation in league tables - something snobby about it you know.
League tables are a load of *******s anyway.

On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best, I would rate Nottingham 8. That is relative to Oxbridge being both a 10. So it really must be really, really good.

Engineering? Maths? Medicine?. I know they are good in engineering. Genarally, I get the feeling that it used to be one pair with Bristol and the likes then it's rep was ruined by 'high crime rates' claimed by the media. Am I wrong?

I would generally agree. Nottingham is a very good university, although suffers due to the city having a bad reputation. I know and have spoken to plenty of people who won't consider Nottingham solely due to the city.

Sorry, I didn't just mean Economics. Maths, Law, English, Medicine and Architecture are very solid too.
.ACS.

I don't see why it bothers anyone unless you are some spoilt rich brat who has never faced the real world. I don't think any Nottingham student has been shot in the past decade by some thug?

I insist that you mention its Engineering dept. :p:
Is it top 10? I don't really know because the grades they require for Beng is very low.

Not necessarily. Some people don't want to go to London due to the high crime rate, and Nottingham has IIRC the second highest after London. It's not a case of being 'some spoilt rich brat who has never faced the real world' as you say, but about different expectations - some prefer a quieter and more idyllic university experience where they needn't worry about crime.
There is no crime (well, murders/shooting anyway) on the campus for Christ's sake!

Certainly top20 but I wouldn't consider it top10. There are a few more institutions that are far more deserving of being top10 than Nottingham that’s for sure.

However it is a strong uni, being 6th for Economics and 5-6th for Law.

I think people are being a bit to harsh on Nottingham as a city. Don't believe all the media bull****!

It's a small city and it is the surrounding areas of the city, which skew the statistics. The actual city centre is a nice place to be and has just undergone major redevelopment in the past year. The nightlife is pretty good to!
