If we are given that a lens is converging, has focal length 8.5cm and the magnification is 3.5 , how can we deduce whether an image is real or virtual?

A real image is one where the rays converge at a point such that the image can be projected onto a screen. A virtual image is formed when you have to trace back the rays because they diverge. The virtual image can't be projected onto a screen and can only be seen by looking into the lens. You need to work out your image distances and then find out if the image is formed be the rays converging or by tracing them back.
