why does the abundance not total to 100 why is it greater then 100. doesn't the percentage indicate how much there is of that ion compared to rest. if it is 100 wouldn't that suggest there's a 100 percent of that ion in the sample which means there won't be any more ions?
It's abundance relative to some reference shown as a percentage, not the percentage abundance of a species in the sample.

It is tradition to set the highest peak to 100% intensity. As you are not dealing with isotopic analysis, it just shows the relative stabililty of the fragments formed in the MS.
