Hi Berty,

6(c) The fertilizer (whether as granules or as a liquid), if in too high a concentration, will reduce the water potential of the solution around the roots. This water potential will then be lower than that inside the root hair cells. So water will tend to move out of the roots instead of in. Less water available -----> less photosynthesis -----> less glucose/food produced ----> slower growth.

Root nodules of leguminous plants contain rhizobium which fix nitrogen to ammonium
N2 + 8H+ + 6e- -> 2NH4+
The NH4+ is converted to nitrite then to nitrate ions by nitrifiying bacteria. Nitrate ions are used to make amino acids used in protein synthesis by the plant.
