(A-level Politics help) UK Judicial Appointments pre-2005

Does anyone know of the process to appoint figures to judicial office before the passing of the Constitutional Reform Act of 2005? I figure that it is something to do with the House of Lords, but cannot for the life of me find hard evidence on the internet.

I need to know this to better understand the greater degree of independence and neutrality of the judiciary after the 2005 Act, so any information on why the pre-2005 arrangement was not independent and neutral would be greatly appreciated.
