Why am I getting rejected for jobs when I have loads of experience??

I'm looking for a part time summer job. So far I have been rejected by three jobs: babysitting, body shop sales assistant, bookshop and cafe staff.
I'm really desperate now because I need to save up money for next year of uni.

This is my experience:
Reading Activist/library assistant at my local library for 1 month
Nursery assistant for 1 year
English tutor for 1.5 years
Social media assistant for 2 months
Marketing insight intern for 1 week

I also have been a blogger/writer for my sixth form and now my uni for about 3 years now. I am also an english student at qmul.

Your interview skills may be the issue.
As a previous recruiter, I would say it’s all about your gaps in employment if you have any can you justify them? What you’re currently doing explain it? Why do you want a part time job for and how long? This jobs you are applying for are entry level jobs, why not try and apply for administration or some sort of office work?

Have you signed up for any agencies that specialise in the work you want to do? Are you confident at interviews? These places tend to take people who they see staying there for a long time? because recruitment can be time consuming when you have a high turnover of staff.

Also are these jobs permanent jobs? Sainsbury’s are good at offering temporary jobs. Depends what kind of work you’re looking for and how much time you can commit. I know in my area I have the open university and there’s an agency who they solely use for the purpose of every temp to perm vacancy and pretty much every vacancy.

If you have any further questions I’m happy to help.
Most recruitment agencies feel like going back in time many years, ie they are very quick to tell you that you have no rights when things go wrong. :grumble:
Well you are getting interviews so your CV must be okay. It's probably your interview skills that are the issue.

its not. I've had two job from 16 to 18 and then took a break during my first year of uni and now I want a summer job. The jobs that I mentioned I got rejected from, I didn't even get through to interview level but for other internships I've had previously, even when competing against 5 to 10 other people, I've been told my interview skills are pretty good. So no it's not that.

I dont have much experience in retail and customer service but I'm not looking for ah high level job, I just want to make some money this summer and then quit.

honestly...this is summer time, first of all. everyone and their mum is looking for summer work. you're gonna have to do better than this, and trust me, I know.

second, you are applying to brick and mortar businesses (a company in a building providing products). this means you'll need specific experience with those products. Your CV has no brick and mortar experience. You have no sales experience. You have no retail or cafe experience. You only having nannying and tutoring. The only brick and mortar job you had was at the library, which was for a month, and also, you were not an official employee, you were an assistant. I'm telling you what people are actually looking for as an expert in having update my CV.

So what you need to do is cut out all the rubbish. Interviewers/Human resources recruiters--are lazy and impatient. This is not cynicism, this is facts. You need to hook and keep their interest, and as briefly as possible, especially if you're going for a competitive role (shops and cafes) in a competitive season (summer, holidays, seasonal). Cut out the marketing intern thing; it lasted a week. What you could do is bundle all those together and say you have done apprenticing, and then add "Social Media Asst, Marketing Intern, and Library Asst." underneath as bullets, and detail simply what you did there.

Next what you need to do is cut out those time periods. They are looking for consecutive regular months/years of experience in one role, to gain trust that you can do so in their company. So put the year it started to the year it ended. Not the exact time length or months! Just put 2017-2017. It's vague.

Next, put the most attractive (longest) job experience at the top. So put the Nursery, or Tutor one. But i'd do the nursery as a nursery is an official company, I assume, rather than the Tutor, which is...not official, it's more like a favour or volunteering, unless you were hired by Kumon or something, or an academy.

So all in all, your CV is pretty bare. You're gonna have to dress it up to make it look like more than what it is, while keeping it relevant to the job you're interviewing for. Also, Idk how you went from working at "body shop" to "cafe". You need to figure out what you wanna do.

Lastly, I thought you had a thread where you said you wear makeup and not ur hijab to work and I could have sworn you worked in retail??
This isnt just to you, btw. Whoever is looking for work: you need to get interview. That's all you need. Trust and believe, theyre tossing applications, skipping right over. I dont know how you're getting through applications since most are online if you dont have an actual company or current reference who you worked for to fill in those required questions, since most applications dont even let you continue until you put something valid as an answer :s-smilie: Once you get the interview, it's really up to you. It seems you aren't even getting interviews. I am an expert at getting interviews, after going for so long in the past not getting anything. I realised what I needed to do. My issue, is once I get the interview, I get anxiety and dont go. It's happened maybe 40 times...the phone rings and rings and I ignore it lol. Or, I get the job and **** it up because Im scary tbh lol. So I know how to dress up and clean up my CV to get interviews. Good luck really.

sometimes the interviews are patronising, like the recruiter is curious to get clarity on your application. and if you say what they had a hunch for, that you really did just lump it on thick, they'll say something like "we'll get back to you in a week" and never do. its quite possible that OP is just fine, and is just not experienced enough. not to mention she is a woman of colour, and sales and public service might not be her best route. thats just reality. she'd prob have to just go to uni, apprentice, and land a job through that.
Only 3 rejections...

For the OP - It's going to be based on a skills/experience match on your cv.

So stop worrying about looking easy even if you also can't wear what you want because your parents are strict and your brothers will tell them and you can't be ars*d to carry a change of clothes...whilst you get high studying and having some guy touch your boobs during prayer no doubt...

Walking contradiction much?

How do you know she’s a woman of colour and what does that have to do with getting a job?
one last thing about the time periods:

If you are going for a high traffic shop/cafe or chain company, or a part time role in a busy area meaning they are getting probably dozens to 100s of other applicants, then I am 100% SURE that the interviewer does not even remember your CV. That's why they always ask you to bring your CV even though you went through a long ass application which required you to upload your CV :nothing:

Example: if you put

2016-2016 instead of
1 January 2016-9th January 2016 or

2018-2018 instead of
3 March 2018-2 April 2018

they almost always won't ask exactly when on the interview. Because they prob dont even remember that you said it lol. So dont think "well I should might as well just state the exact dates that I started and ended the role because they're going to ask me anyway." haha no they wont! they couldnt care less. They might not even ask for your CV if it's a popular business or a busy area. They just have questions and notes. Theyre tired and cba!

Now if you're going for a full time role, an office job, a school, customer service, a smaller company, then they will ask, so that's your chance to be honest and really rehearse how you're going to word that you were only an apprentice at several places, and a nursery careworker, and that your experiences have taught you x, y, z skills, making you prepared and fit for their role, etc. I know thats the hard part. Always talk with a smile, laugh at their jokes, let them finish talking, and be cordial to any other people interviewing if it's a group. Look at them when they talk, you wanna look amicable and cooperative.

LOL  oh please! Do you live on planet earth? It's something called racism. People of colour particularly women get turned down all the time, what do you think people march for???

Anyways! I have seen OP before, Im a regular user, I have spoken to her, I've seen her posts about being South Asian Muslim. Just because you havent it doesnt mean it's not there and didnt happen.

Besides, do u really actually think I'd say someone looks a certain without ever having seen them before? :nothing:

now back to waht I said, it's very well that OP could do just fine at interviews, but that she's inexperienced (she is) so I suggest to her to stick it out at uni and apprentice.
