Im just about to finish second year so have been renting a house with friends for the first time. I was wondering, if we get our deposits back, but then the landlord/letting agents notice something (like a spillage on a rug for e.g.) after they've paid us, can they still charge us even when the tenancy is up?

They shouldn't do but they could try to. They should do a through inspection.

That shouldn't really happen, as usually landlords/agents insist on tenants being present while they conduct a leaving inspection. Usually everything listed on your inventory will be checked (to make sure everything is still there, hasn't been damaged/tampered with etc.), so there shouldn't be any issues. If there is an issue raised, but you're certain that no damage was caused by you and a leaving inspection was conducted fully, then you can dispute it.
