I was just thinking it was an interesting typo :tongue:

It would be good for you to also put this on the UCL sub forum, and to let people know what course you have applied for

Yeah my offer was AAB and I ended up getting ABB and they let me in. I think there’s some sort of meeting after results day where they decide how many near misses they’ll take. I’ll say it is definitely course dependant though.

It is course dependant and some courses would probably never go as low as ABB whereas others would regularly. It will also vary from year to year based on the performance of all the other applicants

The course I applied to was Chemical Engineering offer AAA

That is their standard offer and most of their intake do achieve AAA or even higher for Chem Eng. They will be admitting some people with AAB under the contextual offer scheme, but I think you would be lucky to get in with AAB if you do not qualify for that. However, anything's possible and it all depends on what other applicants achieve this year.

Let's say that exams were harder this year, would UCL accept more students with AAB?

@ChemEng456
well grade boundaries change with exam difficulty - so no they wouldn't. around the same amount amount of people will get the A* and the A etc as previously, regardless of how difficult the exam was - so that isn't enough for it to be taken contextually

It wouldn't really be to do with how hard the exams were generally, more to do with the exam performance specifically of the students who applied to do that course. If they don't get enough students who achieved their AAA offer, they will start recruiting from those applicants who Firmed them and were near misses

As others have said, if your cohort under-perform, then you're more likely to be let in as a near miss.

However, UCL do use adjustment for some courses, so if they're able to recruit AAA candidates via that route, they might prefer that to those who've missed their offers.

It's also very likely they over-offer where they can.

The only way of being sure of your place is to achieve your conditional offer.

Say if the offer was AAA and I got AAB or ABB, will they still let me in?
Has this happened to anyone else and what was the end result?

Which course? They didn’t let me in with AAAA for an A*AA course, so it’s very unlikely

I applied for Chemical Engineering last year and had an offer of AAA, i got AAB and so I was rejected on results day. They didn't do the contextual offers last year though and each case is different.

If you don't mind me asking, which uni did you go to?

Sorry for the late reply I don't go here often but I ended up taking a gap year and doing some maths modules again to get my grade up. Applied to UCL this year and got in though but I firmed Edinburgh instead.
