Are you celebrating Pride?

It's Pride Month here on :tsr:

As always, TSR is celebrating by providing lots of important discussions about Pride.

I thought I'd ask the important question, who's going?:holmes:

I've not been to one myself - is it something you'd recommend to someone who's not been? :beard: Perhaps if you've been to one before you could share your experiences below...

@TheCoolestCavy has lovingly provided a fantastic Calendar of Pride events here for your perusal if you fancy checking them out: https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=5955760

Have you been to a pride event before?
What is your favourite thing about pride events?
What are you looking forward to the most this year?

No, doesn't it cost money for tickets in some places?

Insanity
Nope.
It depends on whether my girlfriend can come to England for Manchester Pride, if not we will probably just celebrate the smaller one in Dundee in September, so yes, first timers

No.

Pride has shifted from being a political protest - a statement that gays are equal to straights and deserve the same rights - into being a pseudo-religous event. It's a pilgrimage that serves no purpose other than to acquire converts. It has, as an event and political movement, fulfilled its purpose: homosexuality was first legalized and then the age of consent between same-sex couples was reduced to match that of heterosexual couples. Discrimination against gays is illegal. Gay marriage is legal. Gays can adopt children, alone or as couples. Thus the movement's continued existence is entirely vestigial and unnecessary.

Regarding "allies" - do they need them? No. Why? Because we should all be one another's allies by default. I have gay friends. I have a gay brother and two bisexual sisters, and am bisexual myself. It's better to support one another because we believe in one another's value than because of our sexualities.

Pride these days is more about creating a mardi gras atmosphere, a party, at which the flamboyant and exhibitionistic can showcase themselves, and in which the "allies" who just want to go to a street party can feel at home.
Nope.
I feel like "gay" pride events emulates stereotypes; what we need to do is to show people that ones sexuality isn't the only part of their identity and they are just normal people and are individuals like everyone else. Also commercialism has invaded it, which always ruins things.

Its the exactly like being a vegan, I dont care until you start telling everyone and parading the fact around.
No, to be honest I think this whole celebration is counter productive, you want to show that the world has changed and that if you're gay it's normal, which it is, then don't make day celebrating it, which just makes it stand out as abnormal.

I wait for Asexual Awareness week.
I support everyone because I think live and let live - we should have full freedom in this country and I think Pride people enjoy celebrating that fact; it's about love and courage which I think is beautiful. I'd love to go so I can celebrate the love and pride with them! :yep:

The only thing that gets me is the sensitivity - I don't want to upset anyone but it's hard to remember every definition and sexuality, there is so much diversity within LGBT that it's hard to keep up without offending anyone. I like everyone living their life freely but I'm not a huge fan of the labels - everyone can be who they want to be without needing to be slotted into a category imo.
no not really.
To get things back on topic  ...

Not got plans for pride at the moment. Although I did buy some rainbow socks recently so I hope that my fashion endorsement is my own little way of celebrating this country's wonderful diversity and difference. :pride:
I bought a ticket to the Glasgow one last year but ultimately didn't go. There was a specific reason for it but I can't remember why now. Considered going this year but I've had quite a busy few months in terms of travel/events and not really up for it.
