Simony, buying or selling of something spiritual or closely connected with the spiritual.
How does that like to anglo saxons and normans?

Upon claiming the throne, William had promised the Pope to reform the Church of England (why he was most likely given the Papal Banner). Both William and Lanfranc (established Archbishop of Canterbury) and worked upon reforms of the church. They said that the church was CORRUPT and one of the reasons William believed so was simony and this was challenged. Simony was the selling of church positions within the clergy.

this is in the British Depth Studies AQA exam board: ‘Paper 2’ Norman England c1066-1100. It’s within chapter 7 of the course, learning about the reforms to the English church as established by William and Lanfranc
