I really want to get into Durham University to study history. I understand that there are no specific subject requirements for it, but I'm worried that my combination of subjects is not the best. Should this matter? Also, I will be able to get a contextual offer because of my postcode and the school that I went to.

Here are the subjects I am taking:
Graphic Design: predicted an A, but I'm 90% I've got an A*
History: predicted a B, but it is possible that I will get higher than that.
Economics: predicted a B, but I also wouldn't be surprised if I got a higher grade than that.

I'm taking a gap year to do some volunteering work at a heritage site, so the predicted grades don't matter, just what I get on results day. I think in the worst case scenario I would get A* BB, and I also have a B in AS Government and Politics. How likely is it that I would get into durham with a contextual offer with those grades?

If it matters, I got one A* at GCSE, 5 As, and 3 Bs. The subjects that I got Bs in are unrelated.

Hi, Ervin.

As you know, History at Durham is a highly competitive course. So, once you have your A-level results you would be better placed to judge if making an application is viable.

Your combination of subjects is perfectly acceptable for History, so don't worry about that. You will, though, need at least an A in History A-level; I doubt that a contextual offer would allow you to get away with a B in your degree subject.

Contextual offers at Durham are given to students who meet at least 2 of these criteria:
  • Your home address postcode is classified as Quintile 1 of POLAR4 LPN
  • Your home address postcode is classified as ACORN 4 or 5
  • Your current or most recently attended school is classified as a UK state school

Here's holding thumbs for 15 August.

Yeah I meet at least two of the criteria, so I should be eligible for lower grades. I'm assuming then, that the personal statement is most important? According the the UCAS offer rate calculator, if I got an A* in all of the subjects that I do now, I would have a 58% chance of being accepted, but swapping out Graphic Design for English Literature only improves my chances by 8%.

That's right. Your A-level combination is just fine.
