Give the IUPAC name of the monomer that forms polymer M

Answer: 4-amino-3-methylbutanoic acid

Can someone help explain please

without poymer M, it's rather difficult to explain!

You look for the two amide groups -CO-NH-

and break the bond between C and N making the CO into COOH and the NH into -NH2

Then you have the structure of the monomer.

Are you 100% sure it is butanoic and not propanoic acid?

You count from the carboxylic acid group.

It is alphabetical order.

Amino starts with letter A which comes before M in methyl

We forget a lot as humans. It happens to all of us. I mean, I counted the chain as 3 carbons and not 4, thus getting propanoic acid instead of butanoic acid.
