Excessive hair growth- does the medication work?

Anon because i find this embaressing and there's some people from my uni on here.

I'm of a mediterranean background which could be due to the excseeive hair growth, however recently dark hair has been growing where it never was, and this started happening after i came off microgynon last year. (Im 19)

I don't have many spots, not overweight at all and my periods are fine, however i asked my doctor if i could try dianette which i've heard is useful for excessive hair growth, and for symptoms of PCOS. (I'm also having a blood test next week for signs of PCOS)

I would like to know other girls experiences with dianette and if it actually reduced the amount of hair growth, or if you had a lot of hair there did it do anything? Basically did it help with excessive hair at all?

And also, if i dont have any spots and my periods are fine, would it be worth the (possible) side effects to go on dianette just for this hair growth? And something i've read alot is that coming off this pill can make hair growth become worse and more prominant than before, has this happened to anyone?

I've searched the net and other threads on here but most talk about the use for acne, however i want to know about the hair growth side of things. Any experiences on this pill are welcome, i really dont know whether or not to try it.

Thank you

On behalf of my girl friend:

It does help with excessive hair, although not to a high degree. You will still need to keep up your regular hair removal routine. It has been suggested Dianette can cause some depressive characteristics, which is most certainly true for my girl friend.

I tried Dianette for the exact same problem, but it didnt work on me... So I got prescribed Vaniqa... I dont use it often because I'm so fed up of trying treatment medically. So I just remove the hair using wax and other similar means.

Good to know I'm not alone though

Also, I sort of wish laser hair removal treatment was available on the NHS... Having this had totally shattered my childhood with all the bullying!

No your not alone at all, and though everything else with me is fine, the hair problem does get me down alot. And with dianette and other pills too i think, it doesn't get rid of the problem, when you come off it, it could make spots and hair come back worse which is why i'm afraid of even trying the pill in the first place.

Can i ask, when you came off dianette did you notice any symptoms worsening? or were put straight onto something else?

I dont think I noticed any obvious symptoms as such to be honest but I think I found myself putting on weight more because of a lower metabolism. Also, my doc said theres a risk of developing deep vein thrombosis with taking dianette though that is low. and nopee, I wasnt put on anything else after, I was too fed up to bother my doc anymore :P

Well it's quite an embaressing problem for some of us.. also the generic name for dianette is co-cyprindiol if anyone's on this.

I have pcos and was put on dianette. I do have a bit of a problem with excess hair but I cant take the pill anymore but am taking spironolactone instead. It acts as a antiandrogen and helps lower testosterone. Ive only been taking it for about 5 months and apparently the effects show around 8-12 months. Ive also been using vaniqa for 6-7 months. I think its helping but I also remove hair by plucking and waxing.

I took it for almost a year, and I think it helped my spots but it definitely did nothing whatsoever for my excessive hair. Now I'm off the pill, and my spots have not got worse, but my skin is not perfect. And the hair is there as ever... honestly if I had fair body hair I would die and go to heaven - it gets me down sooo much.

I know how you feel..
I want to try something like Dianette..but i'm worried it will have side effects!
Do you think it's possible to not gain weight without actually changing your diet?

Has anyone ever tried saw palmetto?
I heard it's good for excess hair, i've never tried it though...

I HATE this...i just wanna earn a million pounds and laser it all away

Yeah it's the weight gain i'm also wondering about, i'd like to try and avoid this but it seems many people taking it do put on weight.. and just not making what im like worse already, i have very few spots but i've read some people having worse spots after coming off this pill!

i am so glade i found this to no am not alone. i am going to my doctors soon to see what can be done about it. just askin where as anyone got excess hair i have it all down my stomach just wondering if anyone is the same

Yeah I have fine hairs all over my stomach and the line going down, i just bleach it now because i know trying to remove it will just be more hassle and may make it worse..

I'm also on dianette for PCOS, and like the OP only went on for the hair reduction possibilities (but its done nothing, made it worse if anything!) and not for acne or periods etc because all that was fine. Im a little worried about coming off it because of what i've heard i.e making the hair growth and spots worse when you stop using it, has anyone experienced this?

Also i've been on it for nearly a year and eaten fairly the same amount, and i've not put on any extra weight. But of course every pill effects every girl differently.
